I have a fiberglass bed cover on my Chevy Colorado. Has anyone tried this or have comments pro/con?
I want to install a roof mount antenna base on the bed cover. I plan to mount a 5/8 wave copper ground plane on the underside of the cover, ground it to the truck chassis. Drill the hole for the mount through the fiberglass and ground plane using a standard nmo roof mount. As I see it, this will provide a good ground plane for the antenna. Or, will the fiberglass act as an RF insulator and defeat the purpose of the GP?
Comments?

Paul,
You have an Advanced class ham ticket and you ask this question?

OK, more info needed. Is the bed liner immediately above the METAL bed of the truck? Where, in relation to the cab, within the bed do you want to mount it? Is there a need to maintain leakproof integrity of the liner?
Now some assumptions. If the liner is directly over the bed, and leakproof integrity need not be maintained, why not just cut away enough of the plastic to mount the antenna directly?
Is that better?

OK, I understand that you are referring to a "topper" not a bed liner. Whay you propose will work nicely as the fiberglass is not a barrier to RF .

If you use a 1/2 wave antenna you do not need a ground plane. You will not have as much gain, but you do not have to worry about the ground plane.
