Basic install on my Newmar Canyon Star

Hello,

I needed to install solar to float my batteries while in outside storage so I bought a 100 watt Renogy mono-crystal panel, Blue Sky 3000i MPPT controller (future upgrade potential), and GoPower roof connector plate. My 2016 Canyon Star came pre-wired for solar so I didn't have to run wiring, but it is only #10 wire so will need to run larger wire in future if I upgrade to more panels.

My existing wiring passes through my controls cabinet above the entrance door so I just had to cut into the loop of wire and connect to the controller.

Wes

very nice. the pre-buried #10 wires can be used when you expand the wattage as only as you connect the panels in series.

Agree as far as wiring to controller, my issue would be the wiring to the batteries would be undersized.

I would run larger gage wiring wiring from controller to one of my 1000 watt inverters in the adjacent bay just below and aft of the entrance door. That way I would take advantage of the existing large cables to the batteries.

The wiring from solar panel to batteries wound be a build option requested by buyer.
The buyer could also request the size I believe.
The wires found would only be for a controller.
Here is a thread by DS Don and the wiring in his coach for option. Here is also Newmar Solar wiring information.
There is other Solar information in QT's # 3.
I will be adding your threads in the CS Section of QT's 3.

It is my understanding that all Canyon Stars in 2016 came pre-wired with #10 wiring for solar from roof, via cabinet, through to the battery area. #6 wiring is an option.

My unit was on the dealer lot, otherwise I would have opted for larger size wires.

You will be happy with solar and you will then upgrade!

go with a higher voltage panel routed to a MPPT controller. Now you don't have to upgrade wire. Which IMO is a PIA.

1600 Watt. 45 Voc Midnite 150 Controller.

Or series wire like panels for higher voltage.

The OP is correct in that with an expansion of the system the #10 wire from the roof can be adequate (panels in series), however #10 from controller to battery bank is likely not large enough.

op, just an fyi -

i had a set of wires pre buried, which was 12 awg. recently i reactivated it with 3 240w (720w total) in series. i have seen open circuit 140v (125v under load). it has 1% voltage drop which is perefectly ok.

i use 4 awg wires between the controller and battery, about 2 feet apart.

if you do it this way, yours is 10 awg even better. go ahead i guarantee it will be fine.

(i have additional 6 240w in parallel @ 40v, using 6 awg wires down, all working well).
