We're headed out on our first extended tour, NH to FLA, I'm looking or a REAL 12v air compressor to inflate tires to 80 psi, for just in case, on the road.

Any suggest on a place to get one?

Most of them can do the required pressure - it's the volume of air flow where they fall down. Look for the highest SCFM (standard cubic feet/minute) rating you can find.

It's not just that it takes a long time to inflate a big tire more than a few psi. The length of time also causes the little compressors to get hot and sometimes they shut off due to thermal overload. And the lengthy run time also heats up the wiring to the battery and burns out fuses.

One alternative is to buy an inverter and a 120 VAC compressor. Or if you carry a generator anyway, then an 120VAC comprerssor makes the most sense. We carry a tankless model that takes very little space in our motorhome.

When we had our fifth wheel I carried a 12V air compressor called the Truck Air. Check out the link and see if it will work for you. As posted earlier, it did create the kind of pressures that you need, but it did take a bit of time to "top up" tires 5 pounds or so. The trailer tires topped up more quickly than the truck tires, again due to size.

I picked up a portable compressor at Home Depot for under $100. It runs on 115VAC and can reach 125PSI. I just plug it into my external AC outlet and use an extension cord. Works great and can also be used around the house for small jobs.

I purchased a 115v compressor also. It is much faster.

What Canuck said. I've used a 12V TruckAir 275 on my last two 5ers and now my DP. It work fine for topping off my tires (up to 5 lbs.) and the compressor motor won't get hot. They cost about $40 and are available at KMart. Get a 15' extension so all tires can be reached....

Check Sears, they have a 115Volt with a small tank, that puts out 125PSI. Fits in the compartment with no problem.

this company make a 12 volt that I plan on buying. Pep boys has them on sale now thru April 1. From what I have read, they come highly recommended
