30 Amp plugging in a 50 Amp

Is this a no-no or what? The site I want to reserve (paved site) says 50 on web site but can a 30 amp (TT) hook up to it? TIA

Yes, you just need an adapter, even Wal*Mart carries them in the automotive dept as do Camping World and most RV shops. A good one might cost $20, Camco is one of the popular ones.

Get one of those and you'll be good to go.

Also pick up one that adapts 30 to 15 amp so you can plug into power at home.

The adapter you will be using will put 50 amps of power into your 30 amp cable , to your 30 amp on board circuit breaker . In theory you'll trip the on board main 30 amp breaker before you damage the cord .
But ; even though I've hooked up to a 50 amp post many time with my older 5ers; I'd say to monitor you power use to avoid overheating your cord.

If you have the A/C on, and the fridge on 120 volt power, leave the water heater on propane.

you'll be fine as long as you get use a 50/30 adapter, that being said if they have 50 amp service, they probably will have 30A and 15 on the pole.

The above statement is a little misleading to some who don't understand electricity.

Using the adaptor will put 120 volts ( normal power ) into your power cable.

There is the " potential " to draw 50 amps from the pedestal, thru the adaptor to the RV 30 amp panel, but you would need to turn enough high power items on to do that.

Once the total of the items current draw excede 30 amps, the RV panel breaker would trip, just liike while plugged into a 30 amp service.

The only time the cable could see 50 amps, would be if a direct short in the wiring developed, before the RV breaker panel.

x2 explained best. The adapter will handle the circuit conversion and your electric distribution panel will handle the rest. As Clomok said they probably have 30a at the pedestal. The ad stating they have 50a service is just letting the people needing 50a service know they have it, not that it is all they have.

Two answers, YES and YES
The first YES: Most "50 amp" Sites are 50/30/20 (They have all 3 types of outlets)

The Second YES. you can use an adapter. Most of us like the "Dogbone" style where you have a plug, short cord and socket.

The adapter takes care of everything.

Suggestion: Have the adapter anyway.. here is why
30 amp sockets have a shorter life than 50's (I do know why but it's technical) so you may find sites where the 30 amp outlet is, shall we say "Past its Prime". but the 50 works better.. Go ahead and adapt.

2nd. Some folks worry about the shore cord being under protected, (So long as no plug/socket is lying on the ground I would not worry) but if you try to draw say 40 amps.. Well normaly it is the park breaker you are going to have to reset (Again the reason for this IS technical) But with the adapter it will be the one INSIDE the RV.. Much nicer if it's raining.

I've only used my adapter once and it was worth every penny as it was hot. It was a shared power post and the other site had grabbed the only 30 amp.
