In 1969 I was making $1.50 an hour and could buy 4-5 gallons of gas for an hours work (being simple about it and ignoring income tax). Now I can buy 2.3 gallons of gas since I earn minimum wage (9.04 here).

Now that's progress (NOT)!!!!

In 1973 there was an artificial oil shortage until the government approved the building of the Alaska Pipeline. Then prices dropped. The storage facilities near Patoka, IL were so full that they could not accept any more oil. The oil from Alaska has been sold to the Pacific Rim countries since 1992. Now oil prices are rising until the government can be blackmailed into approving the Keystone pipeline. The Patoka facilities have added another square mile of storage tanks that hold 1.5 million gallons of oil each. This project will continue for another five (5) years, with welders working six (6) days and seven (7) a week. Many of the new tanks are filled as soon as they are completed. There is NO shortage of oil, but the speculators are making out like bandits. If the speculators had to take delivery of the oil they purchase, there would be no shortage.

Your math doesn't work too well in California; minimum wage is $8.00 per hour and in my area, regular unleaded is $4.34 per gallon, with diesel fuel at $4.60 per gallon. In the San Francisco bay area, you can add .20-30 more per gallon. Of course there are a variety of reasons on why the cost per gallon is what it is, but the only thing that matters to my wallet is what you pay vs. what you get. One of my vehicles requires premium unleaded; I put $30 worth in the tank and got 6.6 gallons of gasoline.

I'm sure all the retired petroleum people are happy, since they likely have a lot of stock in their company. For the rest of us, well, like already has been mentioned, the current administration has no problem with European fuel prices here so as to further their energy agenda. And the funny thing is how they made such a big deal on extending a Bush-era tax cut so it would put more money into our wallet. They just forgot to tell us that it wouldn't remain in our wallets very long.-RT

$ 7.00 gas by 4th July . Sure will make 4.00 gas seem reasonable.

Filled up in Orange County California on Friday @ $4.59 for diesel. I think we were paying a high of $5.25 in 2008. I am hoping we don't get above $5 this summer.

Canada doesn't need a pipe to the gulf. Shorter pipe to Port of Vancouver and ship directly to China.

It really doesn't matter why the price of fuel is going to mars. We will either pay it or sit at home. Guess the kids and grandkids are getting less of an inheritence then.

I work for this man and he just froze my pension,raised retirement age to 62 from 59 1/2 and make me pay for some of my medical now! I am really glad he has the money to go out and shop for things like this with such a fat wallet, when after working for him for 38 years (by the time I retire in 10 yrs now) buying a simple $750,000 coach to travel in will more than likely be a dream.

In yesterday's UK daily Telegraph, there was a piece about the high price of fuel in the UK. I worked through the conversions and they're paying $8.06 for unleaded and $8.73 for diesel.

This is based on the £ per liter price, the 3,8 liters per US gallon and the current exchange rate of just under $1.60/£. This time last year the exchange rate was close to $1.85/£.

Today I paid $1.299 per liter of diesel fuel up here in Ottawa Canada. This converts to 1.299 X 3.76 l/u.s. gal = $4.88 per gallon. (US CDN dollars about at par)
