The tuner changes the parameters that are pre set in the engines computer. The biggest benefit is that it changes the shift points so that your trans doesn't downshift at the mere sight of a small hill or incline. This is a common problem with the ford and personally drives me crazy. Not only will the trans hold a gear longer without it downshifting and causing the rpms to go through the roof, it also allows the transmission to utilize all its gears which the stock ford programming doesn't allow. Yes, Ford does not use 4th gear if you can believe that. (pretty sure its 4th). Anyhow, they also change timing and fuel mapping to get better horsepower and torque numbers as well. You might see a hair better mileage too.

I'm pretty sure Ford uses 4th gear when starting from a standstill.

It seems to skip it on downshifts, going from 5th to 3rd, climbing hills.

5 star puts the 5 to 4 downshift in the program.

Some users complain that the 5 star tune doesn't do the 5 to 4 downshift in cruise control. 5 star is working on a fix.
