5th Wheel With Wheels Off the Ground

I’ve never seen this before. Spotted at a campground in New Mexico.

Not a great idea. There is a reason they are called stablizing jacks and not lifting jacks.

Not that I would do it, but there are six jacks at 6000 lb each plus it appears to be hooked to the truck so it isn't going anywhere. Just don't crawl under it.

I'm not intimately familiar with RVs except for the one I borrow from family friends when I want creature comforts during a disaster communications deployment. I have seen other jacks used just that way at deployments. The jacks could be "pinned" and depressurized so that they would stay up without any power. Those jacks were on mobile communications support vehicles and crew support vehicles so perhaps they are a lot different than the ones used on most RVs. Still isn't it possible that the folks who own that fifth wheel have those heavier type of jack. Keep in mind that some of the jacks on truck campers are designed to permit the transport vehicle to back under them for loading so there are certainly heavier jacks available.

I have a Grand Design Momentum with six hydraulic jacks and it is perfectly capable of lifting the unit off of the ground....but there is no reason to do that. It's a great way to flip the spring shackles when all the weight is of the tires. Just because it can, doesn't mean you should!

I only see the landing gear in the front and two spindly jacks in the rear, wouldn't trust that setup very much. The other things looking like jacks are I think those wooden posts around the sight.

With the lippert 6 point hydraulic leveling system on my 5er, you often end up with all 4 wheels off the ground if you use the autolevel function in significantly off level terrain. Generally you can do a lot better by manually leveling it, especially if the nose needs to be quite low. Because of this I rarely use the autolevel when boondocking, or in small forest service or BLM campgrounds which we stay in a great deal. On the other hand, RV parks for the most part are reasonably level to begin with so you just push the button and go about other buisiness.

If you look closely, you will see the trailer is hooked to the truck. It looks like he was too lazy to unhook the trailer and levelled it to the truck.

The jacks in this photo are indeed "lifting jacks", aka "levelers". Class A motohomes have had them for decades, and now they are becoming common on larger trailers

It is the leveling system trying it's best to compensate for a kingpin that is still attached to a truck. The nose started a good bit higher than the rear.
