6V92 Detroit

Hey guys and gals. I am new to the site and new to the rv world. I have a 1991 40' Executive with a 6v92 Detroit deisel pushing it. I just came into possession of it and trying to figure out an issue with the engine. I saw forums on every deisel except detroit so if anyone can point me in the right direction, maybe someone on here has experienced what I am.

Thank you!!

Been running that motor since 1985 in an off road set up. What is your issue? Also have two 6v-92 with Allison HD-750 [Moderator Edit]

Find a Detroit Diesel shop and talk with them.

First off I've changed all filter, fuel and air, and it will crank up every times and idles smooth but will die after a minute or two like it running out of fuel. I took off the fuel filter and cranked it up to see if the pump was working and it had a good stream of fuel. It won't stay running and when I tried to get it home it had no power and would only run 20mph if I was lucky and couldn't pull a hill without bogging down and dying.

I don't know, with new filters and fresh fuel, maybe fuel pump? Is the emergency shut-down fully on run?

I already had a mechanic come out on the side of the hi way and charged me $300 to bypass the water seperate cause he thought it was clogged but when it didn't fix it he just shook his head. It took me 6 total hours to make it ten miles to my house...where it still sits.

Have you tried running it with the fuel cap removed? Could be a tank venting problem.

With the fuel filter off and engine running there was a good flow of fuel running out into a bucket so I think the pump is working fine.

Havnt thought of the cap. Acts like it's running out of fuel or air but is getting plenty of both.

When you first crank it and let it idle it will die in about 2 to 3 minutes. Or I can Rev it to 2300 rpm and it will bog down and die in less that 30 seconds

Did you check for an "emergency shut down" door in the air intake on top of the blower ?

The older ones needed to be reset by hand.

On the fuel side, check every connection, before the pump for looseness, right back to the tank. They won't leak out, but suck air in.

If the fuel return line looks new, see if they left out a restrictor fitting.
