SAD thing is, the insurance company will likely total it out at the current book market value, which is probably peanuts as to what a comparable one will REALLY bring in the market...

Truck must have managed to nearly stop before hitting the bug, or the damage to it AND the MH would have been FAR more substantial - glad it was there for the shock-absorber it provided.

Good thing ya had a bug on the rear instead of a modern car. Had it been a more modern crumple car, you'd have likely wound up with massive damage to the rear of the MH as the crumple car crumpled up right into the back of the mh.

California is probably one of the best places to find a replacement VW and get comparable price for your bug. I would argue the price up with the insurance agent for a fair value of a classic or antique car. Good luck.

Sorry for the loss. I would get the MH checked. A lot of hidden things could be there. Sitting still and an impact could cause trans issues. Getting someone to do an inspection is a safe bet.

I am so glad the bug sacraficed his life to save all of you. I am glad you came out of it with very little damage to yourselves.

That looks like it was near the Natomas area. Are you still stuck in the Sacramento area?

Boy is THAT the truth! Several years ago our son had a '73 Super Beetle that he had about $8K invested in - we had it insured with AAA - full coverage - with a certified statement of value from an appraiser. One night it caught fire and the AAA adjuster made his first offer: $500. His reasoning: it was a '73 car with over 300K miles on it. We ended up having to go to arbitration, showing the certified appraisal, all the receipts for the engine, transmission, paint job, interior, wheels, etc. - everything that had been done to the car. We ended up, about 6 months later, with a check for $4000 and we moved all our insurance from AAA to GMAC.

Sorry to see any Bug die. Luckily there are plenty of Bugs out there to take the old girls place. Maybe try a convertable next time.

First I would like to thank all for the good wishes & comments.
Now I'll try to answer some of the questions.
The reason the Beetle did not damage the back of the Motorhome is I have a Bike Rack that mounts to the Hitch Ball Bar. That is what left the pole shaped dent in the front of the Beetle.

The Tow Bar is a simple VW tow bar that mounts to the front axle beam The cost for a new one now is $75 - $125 when I bought the one I had was $50 many years ago.
Here is a pic of the Bike Rack.

The receiver bar that slides into the Hitch & has the Ball mounted on it was bent so the Ball pointing toward the ground.

The truck driver was an Owner/operater & her insurance Co. is Progressive andthey have been very good so far.
I already have money for the 2 bikes, bike rack trailer hitch receiver, MagneticTow lights, Roadmaster embilical cord which was cut into 2 pieces, Tow bar misc parts plus Diagnose time to check out the Motorhome.
Plus since Progressive insures Classic car the assesser is one of their Classic car assessers.

Today we went out to look at a 1973 Standard VW Beetle and ended up buying it so we will not be toad less this winter.

Weare at Folsom Lake State Park & hope to get back on our way Monday by noon.
The Bike rack that attaches to the eceiver bar is what saved the Motorhome back from any damage.

Nice looking Bug, that is the new one. You would probably like about 5 minutes and a baseball bat in a quiet room with the truck driver.

Taking a closer look at your VW I realized that the passenger compartment was relatively intact, especially when you consider what hit you from the rear. Makes me feel a little more comfortable in mine. Glad all is going smoothly with the insurance and that no one was hurt.
