We're looking at a couple of used class A's, one an 05 Alpine 38' and the other is a 07 Alegro Bay FRED. I know these are much different but I'm looking for some comments about the quality and perforance of the two. Both are about the same price, and in excellent condition.

I dont think Alpine is in buisness anymore, great coaches though, and Tiffin has a real good following especially with factory support.

Having owned a Tiffin, the quality alone would be a draw for me.

Hi Jmikeb, welcome to the forum. Good luck with you decision. I don't know enough about the Alpine to give you any real help. I've know several people that have Allegro Bay Freds that like them and travel in them extensively.

Our Allegro is not a Fred but we really like it.

These 2 coaches were at very different price points when new. If you are comfortable buying a coach whose builder is out of business then the Alpine is a high quality coach. Western RV was the builder of Alpine and they built their own chassis that they called the Peak chassis. Unlike most diesel chassis they utilize hydraulic brakes and were early users of multiplex wiring systems. Their motor homes were extremely well balanced and very stable over the road. If you are serious about an Alpine you should look for an Alpine owners forum and monitor it for a sense of problems and what kind of support you could expect to have.

If serious about the Fred, I'd give it a very through test drive. Some have noise and diesel odor issues because of it's location.

Can't speak for Alpine but Tiffing really stands behind there product. Had some friends that owned a Tiffin and they never had a bad word to say about it. Good luck with whatever you should decide.

I want to thank all of you for your input. Today we puchased a beautiful Alpine coach. We did take a test drive in the FRED and that helped a lot in making the decision. Although we were very impressed with Tiffin, we got such value for our money, it made our choice easy.

Being new members, we're really grateful to have found iRV2 and to have received such quick responses to our first question.

We looked at the Alpine some years ago. Got turned off by the salesman at an RV show when he refused to show it to us because it was a "$150,000 motorhome". So we bought a $150,000 Newmar instead!
I've always wondered what we'd have if he hadn't done that to us? I really liked the chassis construction and the way the jacks were located.

I salute you for the choice you made. Western RV truely built a quality motor home and I'm sorry they didn't survive the downturn. In '05 I test drove a 38' mid door Alpine with Ron Doyle, the president of the company and son of the founders along for the ride. I believe that coach has a Cummins ISL engine and multiplex wiring.

I encourage you to find the Alpine forum and join up. I'm not sure which one is the Most active but IRV2 and the Yahoo groups are a good place to start.
