Usually one would just leave until the end of the season, I like to clean the tank before laying up the boat for the winter and have the tank as clean as possible. Otherwise organic material remaining over the winter may very well become a permeant part of your waste system.

I had a 1980 C&C 34. It's systems and quality were far beyond anything I have seen in the RV world. The suggestions laid out by many of the posters here will keep you from having problems in your RV tanks. My
fresh water tank has a dump valve on the tank where you can drain the whole tank rather rapidly. I then take it on the road for a short drive so that the last of the water drains out before the end of the season. In the spring you can do a bleach cleaning of the tank following the instructions in your owners manual or from several threads on here. My wife also misses being able to remove that inspection cover on the fresh tank and being able to clean it out. Sailboats designed for the rigors of offshore sailing are built much better than your typical RV.
