One killed in RV tumble off mountain
By CP
LAKE LOUISE -- One person is believed dead and several people injured after a large recreational vehicle went off a Rocky Mountain highway and over a steep embankment yesterday.
Witnesses who saw the accident on the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper said they saw the large vehicle coming downhill around a corner at a high rate of speed.
"(It) slammed into two cars that were coming up the hill in the opposite lane before crashing through the guard rail and plummeting over the mountainside," said Canadian Press reporter Sylvia Strojek, who was travelling through the area.
It appeared the recreational vehicle plunged more than 20 metres, Strojek said.
Strojek said the two cars were on the highway. Two of the occupants were outside their vehicles being treated for injuries, she said, while another was still inside one of the cars.
RCMP spokesman Wayne Oakes said yesterday evening from Edmonton that one person may have been killed in the crash.
