Air Conditioner

will a bad thermostat shut off the ac after 5 minutes?
And will a generator shut off everything with low gas?

Generally gas genny only draw down to a quarter tank and will shut down. I would make sure if dry camping to have 3/4 of a tank. Is the AC fan setting on Auto or Hi/Low setting. Auto setting will turn off when the compressor shuts down.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

Yes, a generator that operates off the main fuel tank will shut down when the level gets down to about 1/4 tank.

Thermostats can cause lots of problems. Hard to say if it would do that. You might want to do a factory reset and see if that helps.

Noticed you are kind of new on IRV2 and wanted to say hello! Have fun and keep her between the ditches!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

The thermostat merely tells the a/c whether cooling is needed or not, based on the room temperature. If "bad" means it doesn't ask for cooling when it should, then your answer is Yes. Otherwise, No. The thermostat cares nothing about time, so 5 minutes is no different than 5 seconds or 5 hours.

If the generator is the only 120v power source and it shuts off, then everything that requires 120v will stop when the genset runs out of fuel. However, many things in an RV only require 12v power to operate, so a generator shutdown should leave those operating as long as the RV has a functioning 12v battery. For example, the lights should stay on. If 12v power is also lost when the generator stops, that indicates there is no functioning battery. The 12v system was running exclusively by convertering 120v to 12v (the converter/charger) and that ceases wen 120v is lost.

A typical gas or diesel motorhome generator uses the coach main fuel tank and is designed to stop at around 1/4 tank. Propane generators run off separate propane tanks and runs until the tank is empty.
