Alaska Highway Closed

Just pulled in to Dawson Creek. We were one of the last vehicles to be allowed to continue on the highway past Fort Nelson. Bad fires around Fort Nelson. Started to encounter smoke just south of Whitehorse and it continued to get worse the further south we continued. Rain is expected for Fort Nelson this evening and it may help with the opening of the highway. The authorities were not sure when the highway would be opened as crews were pulled off the fire due to safety concerns.

Stay safe, in your travels.
We've been praying for rain here in southern BC too.
Visibility here at the S&B was 100 yards due to smoke from fires, 75 miles inland. Poor air quality was 11 on a 10 scale, worse than China, ash was drifting through the window screens , and we spent 2 days with all the windows closed, no A/C and 90+; 4 air cleaners running to control DW's asthma. Eight years in this home and only the second time we could have used A/C.

I wonder if this is the same fire that we encountered towards the end of May this year? While the fire was still quite a distance from the road, the winds were going to push it towards the Alcan. Sure hope that there are no injuries.

More wildfires, and area burnt, in Western Canada , now 2 months into fire season ,than all 6 months of last years season. In BC, 20>30 new wildfires every day.

There was a terrible haze in the air today in Dawson City YT where we are now, lasting most of the day. People were saying the fires are in AK but now I'm not so sure. Stay safe out there.

I live in Fairbanks and we are inundated with smoke now. We are surrounded by fires so no matter which way the wind blows we get smoke. Yesterday was unbearable and it was said that we had the worst smoke in the world yesterday even surpassing Beijing China. Right now it is bearable this evening but it is still very smokey. We have lost over 3 million acres in this state this year to wildfires. Come on winter and snow.

BC, hasn't been in a drought situation as long as the western USA , but the dry conditions are starting to create problems , with food crops and forests.

Agree with doing what you must to be safe. Best to all the travelers, and all the crews trying to contain the many, many wild fires.

If Alaska is anyone's destination right now. We do have fires all over and depending on wind direction it can vary from downright horrible to not bad at all. Today was much better in Fairbanks and everyone is talking about how beautiful the weather is now. I hope the Canadian side of the border continues to fare well to allow traffic through their beautiful provinces.

Fire danger in 90+% of BC, is High to Extreme, thunderstorms forecast for large parts of the province. Not a good day to be on the fire lines.
