root: HELLO. My wife, Lynette, and I just returned from our first trip to Alaska and had the same questions and concerns you expressed. I'm 62 and, she's 60 and we took our 40' pusher and Honda Element tow car (with canoe on top and bikes inside). We did not travel with anyone, but, as you, wondered if it would be a good thing to do. Believe us, you do NOT need to be concerned about going solo (w/o a group) as you'll meet others and will likely (by accident) find you're meeting those same new acquaintenances all along your way. Anyway, just for an example, we made our way to Dawson Creek, BC and began from there. Went up the Alaska Hwy. to Whitehorse, Yukon (just poked along stopping overnight here and there). Then from Whitehorse we left the Alaska Hwy. and went North on the "Klondike" Hwy. up to spend a few days in Dawson City. It's worth seeing!! Then we crossed the Yukon River at Dawson City on free ferry (easy to use) and drove West to the Alaska border and on to Chicken Alaska. Stay a night or two in Chicken. Then drove from Chicken SW back to the Alaska Hwy. and into Tok, Alaska. Then NW to Fairbanks for a week. Then to Denali Park for a few days. Then to Talkeetna for a short stay, and then drove through Palmer, Anchorage and out to stay at Seward on the BEAUTIFUL Kenai. After week in Seward drove East on Kenai over to Homer, for awhile before heading back NE through Anchorage for a short stay in Palmer, Alaska. Then...E. to GlennAllen and S. to Valdez for a week, before returning NNE to Tok and back SE to Kluane Lake and on to Haines Jct. then S. to a couple weeks in Haines. When leaving Haines, we hopped Alaska ferry for short run over to Skagway (where you've likely already been on your cruise), but then took Whitehorse Hwy. N. then NE to Teslin, Yukon, then took Cassier Hwy. S. to Stewart,BC/Hyder, Alaska (DON'T MISS HYDER and do drive up to the Salmon Glacier with your jeep). Salmon glacier is SPECTACULAR and ya don't really need a jeep to take the gravel road to the glacier..our Honda did fine. Then it was S. from Stewart/Hyder to Prince George and So. to Washington state. Didn't mean to bore you with summary but only to give ya a idea of how we did it and will try to answer any questions ya might have about areas we visited. I'd suggest removing the big mud flap from rear of your MH (if ya have one) since there are some stretches of gravel and that flap sprays pebbles back onto your tow. NOW....if ya have specific questions, just ask. By the way..we NEVER encountered an area on the whole trip where we felt ANY safety or security issue...and...we're reasonably sensitive to that concern as you also mentioned. GO AHEAD and do the trip. It's absolutely fabulous and although there are sections of the route where you'll need to poke along at around 30 mph because of sharp dips/cracks etc., if ya take your time, being flexible, enjoying the adventure and scenery, YOU'LL LOVE IT. I do feel you will be able to get many answers to many different types of questions here...because this forum has some of the friendliest & most knowledable RVers out there.
