Alcoa rims cracked and losing air

I have 2017 Winn View with about 42,000 miles on it. When bought it new in January 2017, paid about a $2,000 up charge for 4 16x5.5 Alcoa rims (standard steel rims on inside dually).

Last November, started losing air in outside left dually on trip from home in FL Keys to other house in NJ. I have Hawkshead TPMS.

Stopped at tire shop #1 and they could not find a leak even though I saw on the TPMS my PSI's went from 61 to about 35 in 30 miles. They refilled tire and I went on my way.

Nursed the tire, stopping often to refill and recheck valve stem, bead, etc. Stopped at tire shop #2 in Ft. Pierce, FL and they again could not find a leak, took tire off, soaked it, etc. to no avail. At this point, I had them put the spare on and drove rest of way home using spare.

Refilled tire off the coach and didn't lose any air. Put tire on coach and begin to lose air. Last week discovered hairline crack in rim. This week, discovered another hairline crack in passenger side rim.

Anyone else experience cracks in their Alcoa RV rims, specially on their Sprinter chassis RV?

BTW, rims have a 10 year warranty and Alcoa is making good on them.

Interesting. Photos of the cracks would be great...

Outside the rim, you see the sealant (put in by the dealer) seeping out but not doing a very good job of actually sealing!

Inside the rim you can see the sealant along the crack line but crack extends further.

With the rims being only 2-3 years old, they are still under warranty by Alcoa.
It wouldn't hurt to call their customer service.

However if the cracks are due to overloading or road damage (potholes, etc.) - which Alcoa could claim is the reason for the cracking, then your out of luck.

Overall, Alcoa is good product and I've not heard anything bad about their wheels.

I'm with CountyB, Alcoa makes a great product and sell millions for HD trucks.... I don't want to put a negative twist to this but I think you've hit a few many curbs when you take those corners..... that kind of strike will damage any wheel...

To clarify my original post, I did in fact contact Alcoa and, after some escalation, they are replacing all four rims.

So your theory is that I hit curbs on BOTH sides of my RV hard enough to crack the rims but with no damage to my tires (or road rash on the rims)? Please clarify how that happens.

Out of curiosity, is Alcoa asking for the cracked wheels back? I'd think they would want to investigate, as if there is a systemic or batch problem, they'd want to know about it. Just curious is all.

I'm glad they're making good on them.

Thanks for the info. I would never have though that would happen to such a light motorhome. Must have been a manufacturing issue. Now I know where to look second when I don't find an obvious leak on one of my tires.

First is the valve, Second is the tire, third is the rim / tire bead area due to corrosion. Never saw the problem that RVThere has had. There must be a bunch more out there since RVThere has more than one on a single RV. Must have happened in the forging / stamping of the rim...

Yes, they paid for shipping on the two that were cracked. I paid for shipping (about $80) on the two that were still holding air but were part of the same batch. I thought that a fair compromise as my wife did not to start an Alaska trip this summer on two suspect rims.

As my RV is sitting on jack stands in my barn, I hope to get the new rims next week. The original Continental tires have 42k miles on them so I'm looking to put on a set of Michelin's since everything is apart. I also found a metal valve stem kit for the dual rears which allow you to fill air easier and use a TPMS sensor.

A brief update.

Alcoa is providing new rims BUT, due to a backorder issue, they won't be SHIPPED until July 31!! As I'm leaving for WY and AK in the middle of July, I needed another option.

So I found on ebay a Sprinter refurbisher in OH sells steel rims for about $50 each including shipping. Four steel rims will arrive on Thursday and I have 6 new Michelin Agilis Crossclimate tires waiting to be mounted. If the Alcoa's come early, I may switch the tires over and put the old tires on the steel rims and bring an extra spare for the AK journey.
