There has been a problem for as long as I can remember getting reservations for the popular times. Before that I can remember long lines and people coming in a week in advance to secure sites for things like Memorial Day or the Fourth of July. OTOH NY state was giving a discount for Monday - Thursday last year because there was a lot of space empty except for the weekends. When we travel we stay away from the busy times to avoid the crowds and have little or no problem traveling without reservations.

If you read the Facebook groups relating to full-timing, there are quite a few people espousing this view. Lots of younger, working people with families seem to think this is a lifestyle they want for themselves. We see the result in crowded RV parks with few spots for travelers. We almost always call ahead or make reservations in advance. Don't try to find a last minute site over Memorial Day weekend, July 4 or Labor Day.

That's when old farts like us stay home in the quiet, air conditioned S&B with the pool 20 ft away from the back door. Don't miss the noisy crowds a bit. ;-)

If you run the interstates very much at nite, you'd sure get the impression that if all the 18 wheelers were on the road at the same time there would be no room for cars or RVs. JS things are changing.

The DW makes all of our reservations as early as possible. Sometimes for the next year.

Well, just pull over 'n' git out of our way, 'cause here we come! New-ish dp, relatively inexpensive fuel, time off. It is our turn. Just a grinning as we do!

Yea, it does seem as though there are more rv's on the road but it has been a tough winter and people are coming out, finally. Fuel prices are better now except in Pa. Down a little but not like the rest of the country. It's cheaper in California than here. Pa fuel taxes suck. I like to wing it when we travel. A few hours before sunset and I use the smart phone and look for a place to rest for the night. Never had a problem, it adds to the adventure though. Happy trails

I was driving to North Carolina last Tuesday on a business trip and think half of Ontario's RV'rs were on I-95 north thru SC & NC. Long RV convoys and to their credit, they were moving along at a good pace in the right lane. The problem, as always, were the 18 wheelers. If a trucker thinks he can gain 1 inch per mile while passing, he will go for it. Takes a very, very long time for a trucker to pass a triple axle fiver at that rate...then he goes for the next one...and the next one.

When that happens to me, I intentionally slow down a few mph so the trucker can pass more easily. I dislike pacing him for many minutes side-by-side and he's often governor-controlled or GPS-speed-recording limited to 65mph. Yes, I'm giving in to him, but on the grand scale of things I'm safer not having him next to me for an extended period of time.

If I want to stay a night or two to rest up from driving every day, do laundry and check email I never make a reservation. If they are full and don't want my business I move on. If there is none to be found I pick a FREE spot and settle in for the night.

Kind of like what we do too. Usually we are in travel mode for two days, then find a park to empty the tanks and fill the fresh tank although we can easily go more than a week before needing anything.

With property tax as high as it is more retirees are going to the RV life. Add to that the number of oilfield workers and pipeliners living in RVs spaces that once were open and are now occupied causing general RV people to move to other spots. Around here there a lot of "instant RV parks" put in what was pasture land a year or so go. They filled up in just a few days.
