And they had a good time!
Last Monday we left our home in Central Ohio for Brown County Indiana State Park. Our friends left from South Western Ohio. We were in our Class C and they were pulling their Sundance 5th Wheel. The wind was blowing briskly enough that the semis were running 55 mph. They called us as we were going through Columbus, Indiana to say they had blown a tire and were held up. Yes, they had a spare. But the gentleman is pretty well physically challenged by neuropathy. He managed to change the tire and only hit himself in the head with the tire iron twice. He managed to tie all of the wiring and propane hose that had broken to the frame of the trailer and they were on their way. (Did I mention the propane had been on when the steel belted radial blew out? Why it did not catch fire or explode we will never know.)
They called and said they had stopped in Columbus, Indiana and had a hydrolic shop make a new hose for the propane and they were on their way! Yippee!!!
They called a little later and said that something had flown up from the road and hit their windshield molding and then the front awning arm. The arm was knocked loose from the side of the camper. At this time they discovered the wind had unfurled their awning and the rear edge was shredded. They tied it up and came on to camp.
I went over to help them get the wiring hooked back up and so forth. He said he wanted to get water first. He moved over to the shower house and we proceeded to fill up. Went to get back in the truck... You guessed it! The keys were locked in. NO problem, I'll go get her set. Nope. They're in her purse on the floor of the cab. They call their roadside assistance number from their insurance. They can't get anyone to help because we do not know the ZIP Code where we are. (Don't get me started on that!) A park service person comes by and we tell him the problem. He says give him 5 minutes and he'll get us in. He does! As he is leaving I ask where I could get 6 wire nuts to splice the wiring together. He says, "just a minute" and hands me a bag of assorted nuts and says to take what I needed. WAHOOOO!
We go back to the campsite and proceed to get things put back together. The only thing that went wrong then was the hose he had had made for the propane was about 2 feet too short. Oh, well. They had electric heaters for the night.
The next two days were OK as we tried to get the propane hooked back up. Many trips to and from Menards for parts. Finally found the local hardware store and they had us fixed up in a jiffy.
They say their trip home was uneventful. I locked a front brake caliper as I turned into Maumee Bay State Park for the weekend. HUH???
