Whether I am at a secure campground or in a walmart parking lot, If I get a know on the door after dark, I don't want to open my door or have to shout through the door to communicate to possibly someone I don't know. I would like a communication system. Somehow have a speaker in a storage bin near the door and some kind of weatherproof mike near the door.

What do you guys use for this kind of security, other than say a Glock for instance.

Crack a window open but barred to only open a few inches.

Never thought to need such a setup. We've also just looked out the windows to see who was there ... and then made decision as to whether or not we felt safe opening the door. So far, visitors are batting a thousand. We haven't felt the need to refuse to talk to anybody yet.

RV doors are thin. You don't even have to yell to be heard. If you can't look out a window by your door, crack a window to talk or talk through the door.

I think people are getting too paranoid. In 16 years of full-timing and many, many nights of boondocking in the wilds (WalMart isn't boondocking

) we've never had any kind of issue to be concerned about.

I leave the light over the door on at night, with the steps retracted. I can easily see from our bedroom window anybody knocking on our door. If I don't recognize who it is I could easily communicate with them through the bedroom window, or the small kitchen window right next to the door. So far the only people who have ever knocked on our door in all the years we have been out camping have been people in the group we were traveling with.

When we overnight in spots were security concerns are a little higher (I.e., Walmart lots, truck stops, etc). We leave the interior step cover extended. With the step cover extended - anybody attempting to enter has to figure out how to deal with getting from ground level to coach floor level without using the step faster than I can draw a bead on 'em.

We look out the window beside the door, then slide it open to talk if we feel it's necessary!

Same here. I just can not imagine anyone going around knocking on someone's door out camping unless there is some type of serious emergency and if that is the case then there is the good old window.

Our 5th wheel had a frosted window in the entry door and no other good vantage points to see directly onto the steps... so we replaced the frosted glass with clear glass so we could easily see out. It is high enough that no one can casually peek in while passing and if they climb the steps to look in... well, then we have a different issue to address, but the door swings out so they wouldn't stay on the steps for long...

I don't think people will be banging on your door much if they don't know you. I think most know many people traveling are armed. If you don't feel safe don't open the door, better yet don't stay in that location.

For the few times it may ever happen like said above open a window or talk through the door seems to be the simplest way to deal with it.
