Just got done watching the 2007 RV show on TV. One of the new products they showed was a portable campfire that uses propane and is "supposedly" able to be used even during most fire bans. This is called the "Ban Buster".

Has anyone seen/used/bought one? Would love to find out what you think.

We have a gas campfire and hardly ever use it. It is nice but like a real fire better. It will take the chill off on a cool night and you don't have a problem with smoke. It can be used on a plastic outdoor rug with no harm to it.

We saw a number of portable campfires being sold at Quartzsite this year and we ended up buying one called Campfire in a Can (Gas Version - they also have portable fire rings). The Campfire in a Can is also available from RVUpgrades.

The thing we liked about the Campfire in a Can over other portable campfires is that it does not use vermiculite. The vermiculite can blow around in the wind, it can spill, and it will eventually get sooty and need to be replaced. The Campfire in a Can uses only ceramic logs, which can be cleaned with a brush. The whole unit, including the hose and regulator, closes up neatly in the container for storage.

We have heard that most of the propane campfires are considered to be similar to gas grills and can be used during fire bans, but it's always a good idea to check at the campground office or with a ranger first.

JC whitney has one made by Camco. Can't decide if we would use it enough to spend $150.

Paz, we also have a Camp fire in a can. We bought it for the same reasons you did, its very simple and compact. We used it alot last fall and loved it, I plumbed it into the coachs LP system, no more 1 lb'ers. I highly recommend it to anyone considering an LP campfire.

Wondering if I've seen it and didn't realize was portable campfire. Someone had something fueled by propane I'm thinking now...that was in like a round stand so you could stand around it, warm up and even rest your drink, arms on top did not get hot.

Sounds like fun without the mess to me.

We've had a portable propane campfire for several years - a New Frontier. There are quite afew brands now, some of them officially approved by the Forest Service or similar. Propane fires are generally considered the same as propane BBQ grills and can be used wherever they are allowed.

We don't use our propane campfire often - the real thing is much nicer (to us, anyway) - but its great to have when the occasion is right and a real fire is not possible.
