We are first time campers and we are trying to find out what works best. We used AquaKem Liquid and it seems to work great however, it doesn't appear to be eco friendly.

Mayberry, welcome to iRV2.
Many of us do not use any holding tank chemicals and odors are not a problem.

None for us, just lots of water when flushing.

Sometimes I don't use anything, and sometimes I am 'ordered' to use something. In those cases I use a powdered chemical (whatever was on sale) since I don't like using up my CCC with unnecessary liquids. Sometimes I'll use a powdered water softener and some soap in order to facilitate cleaning.
At a seminar at a Ralley, someone claimed that powdered 'Tang' did a good job of keeping the tanks sweet smelling and clean.

Lots of water as stated above. We also use Calgon water softener (liquid or powder) along with an occasional dose of Dawn dishwashing liquid. I try to add the Dawn with about 10 gallons of water as we travel between campgrounds or dump stations. The Calgon after every other dump seems to keep the tank slippery enough to keep "things" from sticking. Those same "things" also slip through the pipes nicely too!

Plus, AquaKem liquid contains formaldehyde, which is a huge no-no for use in campgrounds with septic systems. Don't let them catch you using that stuff!

I use SupremeGreen, Toss-Ins (formaldehyde-free ) but will be installing a roof vent system soon.

I've used a few but most recently favored EnviroChem.
Now that I'm going fulltime, I've received samples of Valterra RV-Trine. It is a bacteria formula. I am planning on giving it a try. I'm not sure I'll have a long enough period of time between dumping the black tank to make this necessary. Are there any opinions on this product?

Joe, how much dishwashing liquid do you use in the blackwater tank? Just curious, I have never tried using anything but chemicals in the tank.

All we need for our 35 gallon black tank is about 1/2 cup of Dawn, preferably before we drive somewhere.
