One day, I was getting groceries and all the check outs were lined up. So I ventured to a different part of the store and found that there were only express lines.

I looked up and saw "9 items or Less".

I looked down, rather forlornly, as I noted the heap of items in the basket.

I tried inconspicuously to pull the mass of condiments out of my carry all. Like most people you think...."Ah, I'm only getting a couple of things" and before you know it, you're overflowing with all kinds of things you have wanted forever and or found a sale on something. You didn't need them, but hey....."I got them for 3 cents off, so I might as well buy 10!

In any event, as I'm unloading my items, I'm counting 14, 15, 16.... and as I look behind me, the line up suddenly had about 8 people in it. They all had this look of disdain over the crowd of items I was placing on the carousel.

"Oh the leers" I was thinking to myself as I looked at the older lady directly behind me trying desperately to hang on to her walker and her basket of 3 items. I could read her mind and guilt was overshadowing my desire to simply get out the door.

I needed to think of something to save the day I thought to myself as I fumbled through my wallet for my credit card.

Then, suddenly as I looked up at the 9 items or less sign above me, I looked down and spotted my name on my card.

In a matter of fact voice I looked at the girl behind the till and said "Your sign says 9 items or Less.......I showed her my credit card and said "My name is Les".

The checkout girl as well as the line up of oldsters behind me, burst into cheer and laughter at my well timed irony. I grabbed my bags of groceries and smiled all the way out of the store.

To this day, that story brings a chuckle every time I think of it and tell it.

Les

I went though a quick checkout at Superstore (grocery) once that was 12 items or less. I had 15 or so and a similar thing happened. Two old gals were behind me and by time they were done I went skulking out of the store feeling like a dog who just messed on the floor. I just stand in line now.

Ya. I haven't seen a "9 items or Dennis" sign yet.

I take it she wanted more and got it. She lacks for nothing (accept maybe a big bag of money) so I'd pretty much say she got her wish.

I was with my son the other day at a store and he was purchasing a couple items, and the gal at the checkout asked if he wanted a bag. He said no thanks, I already have one, she is at home with the kids. She had a shocked look on her face. That's just Brian.
