Avoiding fuel taxes

I pulled into a Conoco station to fuel up and there was another DP in the opposite stall fueling up. I didn't pay too much attention at first but as I waited I glanced over to see him filling with off road red dyed fuel. I made the comment did he know that was off road fuel and he said yep and it's 47 cents a gallon cheaper than the stuff you're pumping. I said well there's a hefty fine if your caught using that fuel and he said no one has ever been stopped and tested while driving a class A coach. I left wondering if he had a Montana LLC too, but Montana LLC's are legal. I'd be afraid to do this for the small amount gained.

He's prolly right too... but you sure can see him filling up

Now, why did the station let him fill up?

I have never been stopped and checked in the 12 years we've had DP's but there are stories out there about it happening. On the West coast I don't see the offroad diesel very often at the stations.
It's also said that it takes 4 or 5 fillings with non-dyed fuel to get enough of they dye out so it's not detectable. Not worth it to me!

If you or someone else is unwilling to call and report someone evading road taxes it is very likely that he will continue to get away with it. Shoot, the IRS will even pay the informant a portion of any fine recovered and, quite frankly, that is probably the only way he would get caught.

If I ever tried it they would get me before I could get out of the parking lot. Just not worth the risk.

Yes, there is a finer group to not be associated with..............

State of California Franchise Tax Board. (state income tax)

They make the IRS look like your best friend.

Hate to go John Stuart Mill here and recite On Liberty but I have too much to keep me busy just with what I do to be concerned with what other people do that doesn't effect me.

Always someone looking for a way to cheat the system. yes, I agree to save money where possible, but pay you fair share. He can afford the big DP, but wants to cheat on the fuel...figures...Maybe he should have bought what he could legally afford to use.

No...we have marked boat gas or farm fuel to get caught with. It's purple gas.

Well, here is the procedure allowed by law when you see that.

Take down his license plate(s) number(s) and a description of his rig, If you can get him to tell you where he's going all the better.

Notify the state treasury office (Tax man)

They send someone out, dip a bit of fuel and note the wrong color, read the odometer, estimate teh MPG and how many gallons of tax he owes and you get a percentage.

I strongly disagree. When others game the system, it affects all the rest of us chumps who are stupid enough to play by the rules.

I tried to let this go, but alas...

I am stymied by your assertion that it "doesn't effect me". Does shoplifting effect you, bank robbery??? Somebody always pays. If somebody is getting something free that the rest of us pay for, the rest of us are paying more. Just the way it is.
