What is the least expensive source for purchasing an awning for a slide-out?

Don't know if they're the cheapest, but Tough Top prices are competitive. Their toppers are also made from heavier material than the originals. The heavier material should last longer, and it doesn't flap in the wind as much as what the originals were made from. Shipping was fairly fast, and installation instructions were easy to understand. There is also a video on the website, and they are available to answer questions by phone. Good company to deal with and a good product.

My travel trailer does not have an awning over the slide out and I am interested in installing one. Who makes the best one for the money?

we do not have a slide-out roller/ would need roller and awning? can this be gotten at tough top? thanks to all that replied.

OP is looking for the whole unit, not just the fabric.
I replaced all our slideout covers with Tough Top's last year, much heavier material than the original.

No, they just do replacement fabric.

we got an estimate from camping world and for our 13 ft. slide-out , it was less than 500.00 for awning and installation.

Try Camping World. Many dealers keep standard sizes in stock and installation cost are under 1 hour. If you want to upgrade to an acrylic fabric (much better) with a metal wrapper to match your other awning(s) they can order it for you from A&E or Carefree of Colorado. Good luck and keep us posted.

Can anybody give me the answer as to why there are awnings on slideouts on some units and not on others and are they good and why?

Just my thoughts but the awning over the slide out helps keep "junk" off the top of the slideout that you don't want to bring inside when the slide comes in. Could be tree branches, bird droppings, etc. It also helps keep rain water off the top of the slide reducing the possibilities of leakage. It could also be helpful keeping the RV cooler if is it real hot since the sun is hitting the cover and not the RV. As far as why some have it and others don't it is simply dollars.
