TX. No state income tax. >26000# MH $346. 8.25% sales tax. Moderate real estate tax. Some of best roads in US.
Friendliest forks anywhere. Wildly varying climate due to size. Coast, forests, and desert.

This is how they calculate it. It is all based on the MSRP (NOT what you paid...but the window sticker base price). My rig had a $256K base price before options)

Regardless if you are the second or third owner, they still start with that Base MSRP and the registration drops 16% per year.

On top of that, they use NADA data base to look up the price. The orig registration fee was $$3300 based on a $320K base price (which was wrong). But I went back with a copy of my build sheet which showed the actual $256K base price and got a $350 refund.

I had thought that folks said AZ was cheaper for vehicle registration, but not from what I see.

Has anyone found a way to get a reasonable fee for the registration?

Thanks,

Dan

Wondering if that fee is tax deductible as it’s probably more of a tax than a registration fee. I live in N.J. so I know all about getting screwed with high taxes and fees lol.

Each state must acquire the funds to provide the services YOU demand. How each state does this is a combination of tax's and fees. STOP demanding good roads good state camp grounds and services like ,911,fire,police,utilities and tax's and fees will decrease. Just part of the life WE choose.

Welcome to Arizona:-)
X2. We moved from IL where all vehicles regardless of age or value cost $110 to register, to AZ where as described they go by value. A bigger hit than the one OP took coming from CA. But overall, we are very happy with the other taxes in AZ.

Well....I guess I will put the money I save when getting gas at Costco towards my registration

The question of fairness and use comes into play.
I drive my car every day on the roads, and that cost me $400/year registration.
I drive my RV less than once a month on the roads and it costs $2700/year.

Oh well, I will just have to grin and bear it...

fire up- you know a 'secret' way around CA reg laws or fees, spill it. We regd a used coach here in 2015-DMW wanted to see what we paid for the coach-bill of sale. We paid the sales tax rate for our county on the purchase price.
IF you know of a different method, please advise.......

I will simply say that, based on what's "REPORTED" to the DMV clerk that a price was paid for a vehicle, the clerk then calculates used car tax and registration fees. And, CA loses a ton of money based on how certain things are done.

But, Arizona doesn't use what's REPORTED to the MVD clerk. As you've found out, they use a more conventional way in that, there's no way around it. By the way, I'm linking the AZ MVD calculator explanation sheet, just in case you're interested. They only use the MSRP or, the "Manufacturers Base Retail Price" as a starting point. Then, they automatically subtract, 60% of that figure to get a starting point for their calculations.

So, in your case, you say your coach had/has an MSRP of $256,000., correct?

$256,000 x 60% = $153,600.00

Then, they assess the present value using two different values. For the first year, it's considered a new vehicle. And being so, it's assessed at $2.80 per $100 of value. Or, easier said, $28.00 per thousand.

So, you take your reduced MSRP of $153,600. and multiply it by $28.00. ($28.00 per $1000 is easier to calculate than the $2.80 per $100) You now get the first years registration fee of, $4,300.

Now, for every year after that, it drops by 16.25%, not 16%. And, the "assessed" value changes from $2.80 per $100 to, $2.89 per $100 for used vehicles. So, for the second year on your coach, it works out like this:

$153,600 x 16.25% = $24,960. So, subtract $24,960 from the $153,600 and you get $128,640. Now, apply the assessed value rate of, $28.90 per 1000 and you get, the second year registration fee of $3,717.

The third years registration goes like this:
$128,640 x 16.25% = $20,904. $128,640 - $20,904. = $107,736.

$107,736 x $28.90 (used vehicle assessed value rate) and you get, $3,113 for that years registration fee.

You can see it drop a few hundred dollars per year. My figures are close but, the AZ MVD has small add-ons etc. that will change my figures a small amount.

So, just in case you're interested, here's the link:

P.S. By the way, we too were a bit "shocked" when we moved to AZ and went to the "MVD" (that's AZs designation for CAs "DMV". At that time, approximately 3.5 years ago, our registration was due in CA but, we moved so, we paid the AZ one. In CA, it was going to be $375. But, for AZ, it was $625. Our coach is an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT. It's MSRP was $214,000. Our '11 GMC truck was considerably higher in fees, as well as our '08 Honda GL 1800 Goldwing. So, we got bit for our first years registration of all our vehicles in AZ.

But, we have one thing over here in Lake Havasu City, Mohave County, we have NO SMOG LAWS. In other words, there is no annual smog check for any vehicle. No smog certificate needed upon vehicle transfer. We can put any engine we want, in any vehicle and there's no issue. I consider the lack of annual smog certs and checks to be sort of a checks and balances thing against the higher fees.
Scott
Az. also has much lower gas prices. In some places it's around $1.00 a gallon lower so when you out in 100 gallons your saving $100. That will make up for the reg. fees fast.Been there done that. In some places gas in Ca. is $4.00 an Az. is $2.25,BIG difference.

Easy. Go on the Board of Equalization's web site and read BOE PUB 52 and BOE PUB 111. Certain requirements need to be met but it is easy to avoid paying use tax

You used the calculated figure but forgot to subtract it from the invoice price.
$256,000 x 60% - $153,600.00 then $256,000 - $153,600 = $102,400.

Hey Mr_D,
It's been decades since I've done that much math. My brain and my phone calculator were both frying (can't afford the brain part, never had that much in the first place) . It's no wonder I missed that. Thanks. I'm presupposing that the AZ MVD has some sort of step-down computer program that does all that step-down calculations from when a vehicle was new, to the time frame when a person is registering it at present. If one had to go through all that amortized calculations for each and every car/vehicle, registering an auto transaction would take days instead of minutes.

FIRE UP, while there is no emissions test or inspection where you are at there is in the Phoenix and Tucson areas. Also your vehicle is still subject to Federal emissions standards which do not allow any tampering with the systems or engines. Chances are if you do tamper you will not be caught but is it worth the risk? I was the Fleet Agent for emissions compliance for 1 1/2 years when I worked for the City of Phoenix.

General: the tax part of the registration fees here in Az is deductible on Federal returns. Since a motorhome with a kitchen, bath, etc. is considered a residence and interest paid on a loan to purchase it is also deductible. IIRC it applies to most trailers also.

My house taxes are just now catching up with what I paid in Michigan in the early 1980s so some things are cheaper here.

That’s because it’s TN. I’ve been there. Lol Actually I kid, last time I checked it’s a decent state to retire in if you have money and get social security and Medicaid. When I looked into bringing my dad to NC they wanted him to spend down before he could qualify for Medicaid.
