My choice is gas because I am lazy. There I said it and it feels good to get that off my chest. Please don't tell my wife.

Mark me down for the charcoal column. I have a little $20 grill I got at walmart. Cooks just fine. If I'm cooking chicken, I throw a handful of hickory chips on the coals. Yum.

propane weber for quick meals and meats that cook quick (always add some hickory for flavor)

Weber charcoal kettle for slow cooked meats

propane smoker for REAL slow cooking

all 3 go with me and we always eat like kings when out and I do the cooking of the meat

I use charcoal now, but a pellet grill/smoker will be my next grill. I can have my coals hot and ready to cook in about 10 minutes.

I have a stick smoker/grill at home, but it is to big to bring with me. I have two small propane grills, but never use them.

I use gas.. I actually DO notice a difference in flavor...

Purists say "only charcoal" but alas.. Gas is SO MUCH easier to wrangle.

I also use a genuine Marshall brass Extend-a-stay to take it off the main tank instead of tossing bottle after bottle.

Now an admision.. That was when Wife was alive. Now that I'm soloing,, I use a small proctor silex "George Foreman" Knock off, Just big enough for one person or two if they eat light. It is electric. I don't pay for Electric.

We use a gas grill some, but most use is our small Traeger pellet smoker. Works great for meats and small pizza's also.

Although most folks like the Weber Q-100 (nice build quality), I have a Coleman Road Trip that I like a lot .... it's cheaper build (more steel) but has a few features that I have come to prefer.

Grill looks like this:
Amazon.com: Coleman 9949-750 Road Trip Grill LXE: Sports & Outdoors

Now, the feature I like is that the cast iron grill grates have a keyhole shaped solid center with raised ribs. The shape and size is about perfect for a ribeye or porterhouse. Steak sizzles/sears and cooks like direct flame but doesn't catch on fire. Grill heats to about 700 degrees with both burners on. The grates look like this:
Amazon.com: Coleman Road Trip Cast-Iron Grill: Sports & Outdoors

I also carry one optional steel grate for heating pots and skillets:
Amazon.com: Coleman RoadTrip Accessory Stove Grate: Sports & Outdoors

I actually like this enough that when my home grill falls apart (every other year) I will probably replace it with the Road Trip.

Mesquite wood. Adds a very good smokey flavor.

I have a gas grill Weber Q200. Light it, wait a few minutes, cook, shut it off and eat. No worry about coals spilling if unit tips over. Although I do admit that steaks on charcoal taste a little better.

We have a smoker that we can and do use as a regular grill. As for charcoal or gas? Neither I would rather have wood, oak and apple to be particular about it. We smoke hams, chickens and yes turkeys too on it a lot. Unless we can carry the grill that is both gas and wood I will only carry the wood one. Thou Thom would prefer the gas at times for the fastness I prefer the taste of the wood smoked meat.

If we cook inside, DW uses her toys, if we cook outside, I use my toys , so for the most part, almost all of the above! We have a Q-100 that hooks up on either an extend a stay type brass fitting and/or a separate quick disconnect gas line at the "out door" cooking compartment, a good ole' Wally World $9.99 charcoal grill, (wood chips in foil bowl for that special taste), a Coleman liquid fuel two burner stove and my antique cast iron skillets for open fire or burner/grill cooking. Going to add and open fire grate prior to next trip.

Are you referring to the charcoal that Kingsford calls "Briquets"? They are mostly clay, which is what's left over as "ashes" when they're finished burning. You want flavor go right to real wood charcoal - mesquite does a GREAT job in a smoker!

Louisiana Grill TG-300, pellet grill. Smoke, slow cook, or crank up the temp to grill steaks or burgers....... The taste and flavor of wood fired grill, and as easy or easier than propane in my opinion. I also have a Fast Eddy's PG 1000 at the house, and I absolutely love the wood pellet grills. I'll be cooking beef ribs tomorrow evening to take to the lake!!!!!
