Beware of cheap RVs coming in from Alberta Canada

In June 2013, most of Alberta was overwhelmed by record breaking floods. Many towns were underwater as were many, many RVs - I saw two RV lots on the news, with hundreds of submerged motorhomes and trailers.

This one was swept away by a creek, which at normal times is knee deep at best.

Beware of cheap salvage RVs for sale coming from this area.

I think many people should be aware of RV's that may have come from flooded areas. Do a complete inspection before purchase. There will be signs of flood damage if looked over carefully.

Same may be said for buying any vehicle this year, from anywhere.

Years ago we looked at a DP Safari at Guaranty in OR. Nice looking, drove great and wife loved the floorplan. Started looking closer and found high water marks in the storage bays. Asked about flood damage. The answer I got was "we don't know, they came from another lot in the south". This was shortly after major flooding in that area. We ran away from that rig!

Some Eterna Bond, a little glass work and rebend the roof rack and it'll be as good as new!!

Any vehicle , with any kind of claim on insurance for flood damage , cannot be re-registered into B.C. The B.C. insurance company would rather write a vehicle; insured in B.C. damaged in flooding .; off than deal with the ongoing electrical issues.

Electrical issues tend to be minor, compared to damage introduced by water and silt entering the engine, transmission and differential!!

The engine , trans, and diff; can be overhauled and brought back to life with a first time repair. Electrical can take years to manifest and then repairs can be ongoing , whole harnesses and control modules.
Years back when Chrysler introduced the curtain air bags in PT Cruisers , replacement cost of all the air bags and controllers was more than the price of the car. Flooded vehicle, with air bags, requires replacement of all components to assure that they work. $$$$
Hate to think about the cost of a whole chassis wiring harness and all the electronics on my old Dutch Star , probably go way past book value in a hurry.

We actually don't live in Toronto, but in Sharon, a tiny community no one has ever heard of, 50 km north of Toronto. I grew up beside a river, so any time we buy a new house, the first thing I check is the topo map of the area, and potential for flooding. So we were okay here in Sharon.

The Toronto airport is a whole 'nuther matter with hundreds of people sleeping on the granite floors because the runways a flooded. I really love air travel! But the kidz and grandkidz managed to get out of town on Wednesday at around 2 am. They are much more adventurous than than I am! They are off on a "camping" trip to the Tanjung Puting National Park area. Ever heard of that National Park? It's in the Borneo rainforest!! One of their adventures will be travelling for about a week in a rickety old scow, up the Sekonyer River!

I suppose we won't be hearing from them for a while. The last we heard, was from the Hong Kong Airport with a pic of my grandkidz after 20 hours on a plane. They seem to have survived the experience with more vigor than I could muster!

As a proud Albertan that lived through the flood, I find this post completely distasteful. There are thousands of people that lost everything.

This thread is confined to RVs; and flood damage to RVs.

Flood damage to RVs is fully covered by the standard Automobile Insurance Policy of each and every province.
