Brake Conversion

I am working on the restoration of a 1965 Aristocrat LandmarkII.

It is been equipped with surge brakes.

I want to convert to electric. Is it doable and if so is it a major effort?

How about electric over hydraulic? That's how the disc brake conversions work.

Question What to do about my Surge Brakes

The existing brake system (surge brake) is hydraulic and it is my thought to change to electric.

What I am concerned about is the process of making the change. If I decide to proceed must I also plan to change the axles (cost issue).

Maybe I don't understand "disc brakes" vs the "brake shoes" that are there???

I thought that either could be used but just don't understand the advantages of one over the other.

It also seems that weight of the towed is a factor in this decision. This trailer is a light weight (3000 lbs) compared to many/most RVs today.

I would look at the cost of torsion axles with the brakes already installed. Eliminate the springs, including some weight, and have a nice riding trailer.

I’ve owned trailers with both surge and electric brakes. I would rather have surge brakes any day of the week.

Electric brakes require different hubs with the electric brake assembly installed, plus wiring from the tow connector to the brakes and a breakaway switch between trailer battery and the brakes. Plus an electric brake controller on the tow vehicle. None of that is a really big deal for a handy man, but it doesn't gain you all that much in braking capability unless you also increase the size of the brakes at the same time.

The brake "shoes" are what rub on the brake drums to create friction and slow the trailer down. In electric braking, the shoes get applied by electro-magnetic force. If a surge hydraulic system, mechanical action of the ball coupler applies force to a hydraulic line that pushes the brake shoe. Properly sized and set up, both work fine.

why are you looking to change? Are the brakes not stopping the trailer? Fading during long mountain declines? Needing service anyway? Rusty cylinders?

Thanks for the input.

The biggest reason for the change is the fact that the hydraulic actuator is shot. Seals and plunger all leak. Can't get parts.

Also, I am under the impression that surge brakes are allowed only up to 3000lbs and the trailer is over that weight limit.

Am I wrong about the weight restriction.

If I read this correctly, the rules (laws) that restricted the use of surge brakes on travel trailers has changed.

I just may retain surge brakes but I still need a major overhaul of the braking system on my old (1965 Aristocrat Landmark) travel trailer.

New federal surge brake rules to be effective on April 5
