My new rig is nearly a foot taller than the old rig. Once in Davis, (Cal) we turned off the Free-Way and a block later I saw a sign that said Low Bridge. It was one that went under the RR tracks. Since we had just bought the rig and I was unsure of the exact height, I made a quick right turn into a gas station. It's awning was marked at 11.6" and I knew that was too low. I was sort of stuck for a while until I could get back out of the parking lot and out the same way I came in. Luckily I wasn't towing so I could back up. I have since gone under that bridge in a car and if would have been to close to call.

I think someone else already mentioned it, but it's a good idea to place a label somewhere on or near your dash, reminding you of your true rig height.

Low clearances aren't limited to bridges....use care when fueling up as well. Many fuel pump covers are lower than you think. Many of them will have the height posted, This is when that label comes in handy...

Happy travels!

Also, I have encountered a few fuel stops that have installed the warning signs that tell you to shut off engines, sticking out into the lane. They are low enough to hit almost any rig.
