Building a RV port/garage questions

Hi,

For those who built their own storage what did it cost? And what size is it? Does it have power etc?

Also a realtor I know told me that I would be lucky to get 20% of the investment back if I sold the house, any truth in this?

Thanks,

Lots of things play into the equation here. Where do you live, is there a large number of motorhome owners,, how big are you going to make it, and the list goes on.

Build it and don't worry about return on investment

If you were to build a garage, I cant see how it wouldnt increase the value of the property. If it was just a fabric shelter, I could see that being the case, as they would depreciate from day one.

If you buy a pre-fab RV port ($3,000), you also have the option to sell it outright or even take it with you to your next house. I would at least have 120v power for lights and to run the refrig.

Build it and they will come!

I did a 40 x 60 pole barn. Cost in the range of $15,000. I have lights and 2 50 amp plugs for mine and the brother in laws. I made the center part 16 high and the sides are about 12pm but I modified one side to be able to make it higher. Its worth it to keep the sun offClick image for larger version

Thanks all for the replies.

15000$ sounds doable.

A metal RV port can be had for a few thousand dollars. Google for RV carport and you will find providers web sites with size and option tools that also provide a price.

Plus whatever you want for the parking pad. Concrete, gravel, other. And any grading or site prep needed. This can be less than a grand to several thousand.

Power or other utilities vary with what you want, distances, etc.

As for resale it depends on permanent vs not and of course if the buyer has an RV. If the buyer doesnt have an RV the covered storage can be rental income.

I did a 12 x 50 14’ tall for $3500 with one side completely walled. I can add a 14x50 foot lean-to on the other side for another $2400 (and will ASAP). All prices installed, and wind rated for 120 mph.

Will it support snow?

I would suggest checking with your local supplier to price the RV port that fits your needs and location. The RV port shown in the picture is located in the corn belt, so I assume it can handle some snow. I've seen this type used throughout Michigan.

Edit - I believe the portable RV port does not require a permit and therefore should not increase your property tax base.

Ours is 22 x 52. We built on to our existing 3 car garage.
We were adamant that we did not want it to look like an addition. It must look like it had always been there. I think they nailed it.
We're not concerned about resale value. The house is paid for and we aren't going anywhere. Ours cost considerable more that what's been posted above.
We have water and 50 amp service inside and it's fully heated and cooled.
