Buying in the USA or from a dealer in Canada
Looking at buying a motorhome in the future. As I live in canada was thinking should I build a relationship with a Canadian dealer. Or go to a dealer in the usa or direct to the manufacturer factory . I'm thinking new or may be pre-owned. Also I have been reading if you bring to canada has to be Canadian specs thx in advance clint

You may want to check into any additional taxes that may be involved in getting one from the US and titling it in Canada.

Thx RV wizard that is why I'm holding off because there is about 30% difference with the Canadian dollar. But on the whole RV,s seem cheaper in the usa then I have to pay the tax so have to keep up with the math

Biggest reason to buy in the USA is inventory availability. Many Canadian dealers don't stock a lot of variety to choose from. They will order what you want but if you want to see lots of models you are better doing your browsing down south, imho.

Take a stroll around Midtown RV in Penticton. If it's Newmar or Airstream, new or used, they have a pretty awesome selection.
I have bought my motorhome and two other vehicles in the US and saved a few bucks along the way.
But that was back when the dollar was at par. By the time you get finnised with out of province inspections etc. And a $.75 dollar, I don't think it's worth the hassle. Unless you scoop a real good deal. IMHO,

I looked in the US and Canada, found what I wanted in Texas, Arizona, Kelowna, BC, and Cornwall, Ont. The ones in Canada were much less with the way the dollar is now. If you look long enough, hopefully you will find one in Canada and avoid the importing headaches and costs. Good Luck.
ps. I bought the one in Cornwall and drove it 4300 km. home.

Many of the northern states like Montana have RV dealers that cater to the Canadian buyer and will walk you through the process. It all depends on what the exchange is now

I did my own importing from the USA seven years ago , and since then the rules on exporting vehicles from the USA have changed , and not for the better.
These posts will be worth a read.

You do not say if you want new or used.
Check all the sites, dealers, etc for prices.
Compare apples to apples......if you want a gasser or DP.
I am finding that a lot of used prices are the same in BC as in the USA.
DO NOT fall for the the sales pitch of "if you buy in the states you
cannot get warranty work done".
First..... decide what you want
Second......research prices
Third.... check the floor plan you want
Fourth.... look at the coaches
Fifth.... have an independant check done on the coach
Sixth....make sure "ALL" the work you want done is done.
After all that.......enjoy your choice

We are from Sask as well and can relate to the lack of inventory here. We bought our Monaco privately in Kelowna last year. Alberta and BC have a good selection to choose from, both dealer and private. There are a number of Canadian and American websites for selling motorhomes. I'm betting you can find Canadian motorhomes for sale on American seller websites.
I think the exchange rate and applicable taxes make it uneconomical to buy in the US right now.
There is a lot of good info on this forum (and other forums) about purchasing a motorhome. The info and experiences of others can save your butt.
