I'm in the 'put a stop payment on the check' camp. Even if he is has a cancelation policy backing up his stance, its a bad business relations response to act to act like that!

Let us know the campground name so we will know to avoid that park!

To treat customers like that is BS!

As is typical on discussion boards we are only getting one side of the story. Maybe there is a reason the owner of the CG got an attitude. I am with the group that says if there is a no refund policy, then there is no refund. Even if the CG owner was a jerk for no reason, that doesn't give you the right to refuse payment. You agreed when making the reservation if you cancelled there is no refund. Cancelling the check, when there is a no refund policy, makes you no better than the jerk.

No matter what happens please leave a seriously negative review in "Trip Advisor" and "RV Park Review" explaining how you were treated so others will be forewarned.

Hopefully the park will realize that getting such bad publicity isn't worth the small profit they gain by treating their customers like trash.

Stopping payment on a check can open a can of worms. In California you can be taken to small claims for 3x the value of the check. If you don't show, you loose. Your stopped payment can be referred to a credit service and be reported on your credit report. If the park is a member of a national or regional group they may reference your information on their group service, affecting future reservations at other locations. I have no legal expertise, (obviously) but your actions in different Counties and States can result in different outcomes. If the campground factors it's accounts then some company other than the campground owns your check. Just things to consider.

If you did not review the cancellation policy before making the reservation than it's your problem why are you bitching. Business owners have rights too.
As for stopping payment depending on the state you might be opening yourself up too a big can of worms that will cost you a lot more than your deposit.
To many here know not what they speak.

Contact them, tell them you're coming even if you're not. Since they won't refund, don't let them double dip.

It seems to me that any court litigation has the notion of making the injured party whole. The basis of the no refund policy is that by making the reservation, you made it impossible for them to rent the space to anyone else in a timely manner. Since it is the 4th of July and we all know how busy places are, the likelihood of a space going empty is pretty much nill especially with this much lead time. The campground owner in order to collect from you would have to, in court, demonstrate that they were injured financially by your cancellation and unable to recompense themselves as a result. If he were to subsequently rent out the site after your cancellation, that would effectively demonstrate that he was not financially damaged by the breach of contract and therefore is not entitled to collect extra. Stop Payment if it matters to you on principle but be prepared to prove that he rented out the site you reserved. And if for some reason he doesn't, then well you take your chances. The other option would be to have someone show up to claim the reservation the day of. If it isn't reserved still, then who is in breach?

Offer the site to someone wanting to go at a very, very, slightly reduced rate. All of this would have to be under your name of coarse and those going will have to accept the attitude of the owner.

The missing link here is what is the campground's stated, written policy? You risk shooting yourself in the foot with stop payments and all this other stuff if their policy is in writing and posted on their website.

I stopped doing business via check years ago. If this reservation had been done via credit card, this would be a non event. Assuming the campground didn't have a little different attitude regarding your refund at that point, a phone call to your credit card company would end the dispute....

That may not work if it was a posted policy. Visa would protect the CG ( which IMO , they should ).
