Camping world

As a newbie I am getting the idea that people love or hate camping world. I don't want this to be a complaining thread but I want to know if they are independently owned, if some are better than others, if their service is good, etc. For those that have bought an RV from them was it a good experience?

As I said I am a newbie, we have rented a TT and a class C and are learning the ropes before buying.

Good Same owns them and like most business , some good some bad. Most things CW sells are available at Wally. Kmart, and other stores at less prices. I have not read many good reports regarding their service so be cautious there. Do your homework, ask questions, have the RV you decide on inspected by someone that is well educated in RV's and by all means drive it and not just around the block. Good Luck

I wouldn't buy an RV from them, but they stock a lot of RV merchandise.

In my experience Camping World is a bit over-priced, as everything they sell is available elsewhere, and/or on-line for less, even with the Good Sam discount.

If you need service look at the reviews here first RV Service Reviews there are 3 CW within about 3 hours of our stick home and they got 1 fair and 2 poor ratings. This does not mean they are all like that of course.

For anything you are just looking to purchase Google the item before buying from CW as they tend to be high on some things. I have found others that CW beat anywhere else I could find so as said do your homework.

I bought my last RV from CW. Got a great deal. But I would not service it with them. The techs at my local shop have no training and just wing it. They did great work when they were colo acted with a local RV dealer. But when they parted the service went down the black tank. We do buy some things there. But most things we get elsewhere.

I think Camping World's management is totally disconnected from the true needs of RVers. Management is dictated by bean-counting. Of the two CW stores in the Chicago area, they closed the easily accessible one in Bolingbrook and now if you want service or parts you have to make the two day trek (exaggerating slightly here) to their Island Lake store, which is not easily accessible. It's as if they looked at the map and said, "we don't have enough business to support two stores, lets combine them into the one that's closest to the Illinois/Wisconsin market." Fine, except it's impossible to get to without dealing with endless traffic lights.
I order most of my RV stuff from Amazon, better pricing and usually free shipping.

I had a bad experience with one when trying to purchase an rv but hey, you can have a bad expeience with just about anyone. Their stores are usually well stocked but then again anything related to rv's your going to pay the price. As far as their service department I think you'll find good and bad reviews on that as well. For me I had a good experience with that as we needed a refrig replaced the day we were leaving on our vactaion. They bent over backwards to get it done for us so I give them a for that. The location that took care of that repair was in Bellevile, MI.

Been to maybe 25 different camping worlds in our travels.
No two are alike except for their name on the door. Had both good and bad experiences and although I would prefer an independent shop sometimes CP becomes the only game around. Having said that I did have some accident work at Lazy Days in Florida and although slow they were worth the wait.

Hi DaveTN,
I agree that each store is different (for service) so ask questions before handing over the keys. The work I have had done at CW stores was done on time and of high quality. No complaints from me on their service.

As to the store merchandise, I consider them a convenience store. If I need something like right now, they usually have it. They also seem to have the odd item that I need for some unique to me purpose.

As to pricing, overall, I am pleased with their pricing (on sale pricing with GS discount). I do search the Internet for comparison and find very few places selling for a total cost to me the same or below what CW's total cost to me is.

Lastly, their return policy is great. For what ever reason, I can return merchandise with no hassle.

I have been a customer of CW since 1978.

Hi DaveTN,

Here's a list of IRV2 sponsors. http://www.irv2.com/forums/vendor/list-by-alpha/

Give RVUpgrades a shot at your business.

I found our one and only Camping World up here in Minnesota to be an interesting experience. The employees made an effort but it was obvious they did not have a vested interest in the future of their employment.
