There are signs noting that the refuge is closed due to the government shutdown.

Wow, we are laid off from a non-paying job now. How bad can it get.

Ken,

Still have electricity and water at the pedestal? If so, then life's still good! If not, you have the gate key and that's why 5th wheels have wheels.

On a brighter note, we tried to call the IRS this morning and they are closed.....or at least their call centers. I have an audit pending for a client that may get postponed, if we are lucky.

Overall the shutdown in not a positive move. I'm not sure where the art of compromise got lost, but I don't see it out there.

Cool ... The IRS is closing too? A bit of a bright spot for a gloomy situation. As to the National Parks closing ... Has anyone knowledge of the Natchez Trace being closed? It is a National Park, albeit a long skinny highway type park, but it is a free drive and no government employees are needed to handle entry fees. Policing it is of course done by fed employees, but the shut-down elsewhere does not include safety and law enforcement employees. So maybe the Trace will remain open. I've had zero luck phoning the NPS to ask. Lines are clogged. Web sites are not loading for me or at least they are so slow that I time out before loading is complete.

As a retired federal employee I was worried about being able to continue traveling in the RV this month but they did do the automatic deposit to my account. So from my narrow tunnel vision that is great.

Please help me out here. Have there been any prior shutdowns after which the furloughed Federal employees were NOT paid retroactively for their furlough days? I can't recall any, but then again my dog ain't in that fight.

My son-in-law is stationed at Fort Campbell. If the campground there is shut down, there is also a nice commercial campground that we've stayed it. It's nice:

I hope they get things sorted out by then otherwise will have to find enough another option to visit my nephew who is stationed there.

Called Lackland AFB FamCamp, they are open.

Called Fort Sam Army Camp, they are closed. Two volunteers, one on for one hour in the morning, and one hour in the afternoon. All other personnel are furloughed. No reservations can be made.

Some states are running parks on Corp of Engineers property surrounding COE reservoirs. Not sure where they end up legally - probably depends on the specific contract the state has with COE.

Technically, the hosts at COE-managed campgrounds are federal contractors. They get paid by the feds, are supervised by the feds, and call on feds if they need law enforcement or maintenance or other services.

We had a similar situation at the time of the last threatened shutdown. We had reservations at Okeefenokie State Park in Georgia but it is surounded by a National Wildlife Refuge. I'm assuming the state park will be closed this time because the access road through the NWR will be gated.
