I agree. No reason to subsidize cg. This is more about forced taxation (ie health care) and the poor campers got stuck in the middle.

What about BLM lands? We 're heading to southern Arizona in a couple weeks and one of the things we wanted to do was dry camp on BLM land. Does anyone here know if that's still possible?

We (and others in the park) were given two days to pack up and leave.

You can count on a postponement. They are among the "nonessential". Imagine closing down the revenue generating side of your business. No doubt any interest and penalty charges are not suspended

I settled a case for a client last week. Now I'm wondering how the thing will get processed through the system. At least we have all the paperwork signed by both parties

The BLM Rangers are still operating, and if you can get to some BLM land available for boon-docking without going or entering a federal park you might be OK. With us, all the favorable BLM Land is within federal parks..which are closed. There are some areas around the wast treatment facilities...but that is not a very pleasant area.

Any guess on the status of rest areas on Interstates? Are the maintenance people there funded by federal or states?

Great question. May first guess is state workers based on their uniforms.

Here, in the White Mountain National Forest the concessionaire run campgrounds are still operating and camping fees are still being collected.

Volunteers have been told that we are free to stay until the weekend after Columbus Day. That is when many forest roads will be closed and gated for the winter anyway. We turned in our uniforms, keys and trucks today and will be headed over to the Maine coast on Thursday.

There was some discussion at WMNF HQ today about whether or not to lock the vault toilets at the trail heads, recreation areas and scenic overlooks. It was decided that even though the word from DC was to deny the public access to everything possible, locking the vault toilets would only result in damage to the structures by folks breaking into them due to personal emergencies. See, there actually is still some amount of common sense in government.

The rest areas on the interstates are maintained by the individual states.

Someone also asked earlier if the Natchez Trace Parkway were closed. I'd be curious about that too. It doesn't seem as though they'd be able to close it because there are just way to many connecting and intersecting roads along the Trace. There are also a number of private businesses that depend on the traffic. I would imagine that the visitor's centers and the numerous historical exhibits would be closed and gated off though.

Wow, we are laid off from a non-paying job now. How bad can it get.

Ken
If you have the key set up a card table and charge 25.00 for people wanting to come in. This way you can take the place of the Government employee who is going to get their pay anyway and make some cash for yourself. Jim

Who will fight any forest fires still burning....? Lets get some GOP's & DEM's into some fire suits and out to the front lines and make them earn a real living.... A few hours of this and that budget will get passed lick-a-dee split.

I've wondered if these fed/state cg's make or lose money. Does anyone have any facts/figures to answer this? Some cg's, such as USFS Piney Campground at Land Between the Lakes on KY/TN border, are so big they have to make a profit on volume alone. The small state parks-doubt it.

@vtwinwilly, in 96 the state of Az. coughed up the funding to keep the Grand Canyon open, whether that was for us, or them (lost $) I don't know. But I do know the state funded that. As for me, I am sitting at my Government desk, doing Government work, not getting paid; yet have to be at work. As a 33 year Government employee I have been through this a few times. Pay has been late twice as I recall, but never missed a day yet. Sorry for all of the hardships this poses on everyone out there, it does seem a bit ridiculous to me. What if we ran our households the way the government is run, WOW! I am trying to stay working until Jul of 2014 (made that commitment to the wife), but I don't know. It may be time for me to give it up and take a walk on the wild side? Be save out there!
