I have been talking over RV insurance issues with several insurance companies over the past few weeks. I keep hearing the same issue from several about campsite liability or what is commonly called vacation liability. In a nut shell it covers if someone trips over your power cord, hits their head on your slide out corner, 5th wheel pin, falls in your RV, etc on your campsite. I can't think these insurance companies are pushing the vacation liability as the added cost for a rather high limit is only $8 to $12. We have $250,000 vacation liability coverage and don't plan to lower it, but just wondering the following. How many of you have ever had reason to see the vacation liability used?? What was the reason??

You bring up a very good issue. There are some RV(motorhome) insurance policys that don't provide coverage for this liability issue. I just went through this with our insurance provider and found that we weren't covered properly. It doesn't cost that much more to have it added, just be sure you match your limits if you have an Personal Umbrella Policy, if you don't your still at risk.

Remember this, "not all insurance policies and coverages are equal". RVs and MotorHome Policies are special products. This is one instance, when more coverage is better then not enough.

What the heck is going on! I realize that folks are having a difficult time accepting the fact that they can't chew gum and walk at the same time! And I do know that this is a very lawsuit happy nation right now.
Jeez! I think I had better go outside and talk to some cactus for a bit and cool off.
OK, back.
I know that insurance is affordable but what has happened to common sense, personal responsibility and just looking where you are going!
Sorry, I did not mean to hijack your thread. But when I saw this it just hit a button. I do apologize and do not mean to create an arguement.

Let me add to my original post one question.
How many do not have this vacation liability on there RV coverage or know for sure if they have it?? And yes CyberVet65 it sure is a lawsuit happy world.

We do have liability coverage especially since we are full timers. I would hate to loose what little we have do to a lack of coverage that does not cost an arm and a leg.

By the way we also have a Surge Guard on the power coming in for added protection. Just more insurance.

A misconception some folks have, is they think that their Home Owners Policy(if they have a perment home) covers them when they are traveling, well unless you have that rider called out on your policy, it doesn't. And then, some insurance policys won't allow the policy holder to do that or it's just not available.

I don't know whats worse, taxes or insurance, their both a necessary evil and it seems that's all we live for to have pay.

If you don't pay your taxes, they(the big man) will take everything you have, if your not properly insured, the the littleman(the accident chaser) will take everything you have. In both cases, in the end we screwed.

I appreciate your raising this point. To be honest, I don't know whether we are covered or not and I'll now look into it. I hadn't really considered that it wouldn't be covered as a part of our homeowner's insurance but can understand now why it might be a "gap".

As far as the "accident chasers" taking our stuff, we all need to collectively look in the mirror and see who is responsible. I served on a jury where a lady fell and claimed negligence on the part of a grocery store. During the trial, the plaintif agreed that the burden of proof was on them and all of the jury agreed that the plaintif hadn't provided any evidence of negligence. Half of the jury still wanted to award money to her because they felt sorry for her. Ultimately, that didn't happen but if a couple of us hadn't been there to take everyone back to the facts in the case, it would have.

Before you all panic, those of you who have a homeowners or renters policy should check with their agent about off-premises liability coverage, sometimes called personal liability, umbrella liability or other names. Policies from major insurers usually do provide liability coverage while temporarily occupying other premises, e.g. "vacationing", and other situations away from home. They may also cover theft of pesonal property (not the RV). But don't assume - ask. And take notes about what you are told and by whom, in case coverage is later denied.

Vacation liability is pretty cheap, which suggests there are not a lot of lawsuits, but who wants to be the one who gets sued and has no coverage?
