Caulk base of shower surround to pan?

The original owners of our MH had caulked between the bottom edge of the surround walls and the pan. It was starting to look bad, so I removed the old caulk and started prepping the area for new caulk.
While doing so it seemed as though the pan actually had a lip going up behind the surround, and maybe caulk was unnecessary. Does anyone know if the caulking is really necessary or should I just clean up the area that had been caulked and skip applying new caulk? Thanks

In a perfect world caulk is unnecessary because, as you say, the lip goes behind the pan. Caulking may actually prevent any water that finds it's way back there from being able to get out.

Having never removed a shower stall from an RV I cannot say how high that lip goes but none of the ones I have had were caulked. That is not to say caulking is wrong, just that mine have not been.

To Caulk or Not

Our shower surround cracked and was replaced by Winnebago-Junction City, Oregon. They applied a bead sealant of sealant as a precaution. So, the decision is yours.

My understanding is if condensation builds behind the shower wall it cannot get out if you caulk around the shower pan lip. I have no idea if this is true or why you would get condensation back there but it is what I have heard.
