Makes you wonder what they did with the DEF before they took the container back to WalMart to rip them off for the return. What a cheap scam to make $12.

There's a slime ball or two in every group. It should be quite easy to tell DEF from water. Sniff for an amonia smell and if the cap's not sealed - REJECT. A touch should show it's got a slightly soapy feel as well.

I have never been entirely sure how something can be deemed non-toxic and yet corrosive at the same time.

I bought a motorcycle battery last month from Wally world. Opened it up at home and found the acid containers empty and battery looked used. Same deal, someone bought a new battery then returned their old one for full credit!

So Richard, you ran water through the system? Did the engine "know" any difference, I would guess the engine electronics made the corrections.

Jack,
Thanks for the heads up. I just bought 2 from Walmart for an upcoming month long trip. I'll be checking the seals before we leave.

Jack

Thanks for the important information. If the DEF was BlueDEF by Peak (aka Old World), they'd probably appreciate the heads up. I've dealt with them before, and they are responsive. Here is the email address I've used:

owitech@oldworldind.com

Perhaps they can add a better tamper evident cap like soft drinks or other consumer products. Inadvertently putting tap water in a DEF tank will result in very annoying and potentially expensive experience.

Note: I'm not affiliated with Peak, just passing along the contact info.

I also am appalled by what some people will do to save a few bucks.

I've also seen reports of missing spouts from other sources.

Another way to check to see if it is DEF is to put a few drops on a clean surface and let it evaporate. There will be obvious white crystals if it is DEF.

You have a diesel pick up that requires DEF. You go in a buy a 2 1/2 gal container and use. Fill with water and return the next time you are in Wal-Mart and you are $12 better off. People pulls scams for less.

Don,
I can give you a little info, but I'm new to using DEF. DEF is diesel exhaust fluid, and is used by newer diesel engines

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is used in modern diesels to reduce Nitrous Oxide emissions. It is sprayed into the exhaust and typically you use 2~6 gallons per 100 gallons of fuel. It is 32.5% Urea and 67.5% deionized water. Engines using DEF have a separate tank for DEF and it is injected by the ECU to keep emissions down.
