CB question

Haven't used a CB since the 60s/70s. Do people still talk like they did back then "10-4 good buddy" etc, and Our new to us RV has a cobra CB, we believe it came with the RV not after market installed. Heard nothing on 13 and some on 19 hard to understand most. The CB is all contained in the mic. No external base. So a couple questions, does anyone have a CB like I described and can you understand what is being said?

I have an all in one unit. To me, it is harder to understand then a under the dash type. But that might just be from all the years in stamping plants.

My coach came with the Cobra hand held CB also. After a short time it failed "popped" so I went ahead and replaced but never had much success with it.

This last year I invested in a new antenna, a Firestik, while installing I started to research and found out that to optimize the antenna it had to be tuned or you risk of causing a problem with your CB, which is probably what happen to my first CB. I bought a SWR meter and I got the system working somewhat but still not great. I would probably have to take to a radio shop to get it working better but I don't use it enough to justify the time and expense.

Good Luck

19 is the main channel. Other channel s for the most part are for longer conversations that would otherwise tie up the main channel *19*
You will still hear 10 4 s but not to much " good buddy" stuff.

We have a Midland portable handheld CB that we use when we run into stalled traffic to find out what is going on. It doesn't reach out very far but we can listen/talk to others in the area to find out what is going on and which lane to get in.

The language depends on which part of the country you are in. If you are in a large city area the language can get vulgar.

I don't know about state side but in Canada alot of truckers are going to vhf radios. They reach out alot farther and have a few dedicated road channels.

I also have a Cobra all in one unit. It is a real piece of crap. The only thing I can get on it is the weather channel and static. Mostly static.

I have the same CB your do. I turn it on only when traffic gets heavy. Usually the truckers will know what causing the traffic. Just make sure kids aren't around if you're on ch 19. Very little of the old CB jargon is used today.

Figured 19 language hadn't changed but guess you could say it comes with the territory. I've heard as bad from my days in the Navy so that is not an issue for me.

@denlock - DH probably has same problem hearing just believe his is genetics. His mom is 91 with major hearing issues.

Thanks for all the info, we'll just play it by "ear" for a while.

A small frachtion of the noise from back in the +60/70s but still useful from time to time.. Twice it has saved me a lot of grief by telling me of issues in time for me to avoid either
1:Crashing
or
2: A many hours long traffic jam.

The language can at times be colorful (rated R), but you'll hear worse on the beach boardwalk anywhere USA. Cb , especially side band use is very still much alive and well. Cb check 19 is the truckers channel.
Sometimes it could be Ch 17. Ch 9.is the emergency channel. Some rv parks use a designated Ch also. I've seen them use it for say a shuttle ride to the casino or into town.

The language would be exactly what you would see in this forum if there were no moderators. 10 4"good buddies keep the rubber facing down, pedal to the medal hammer down !
