CCW rules

Leaving Monday for a week in South Haven, MI... travel will be thru IN and them MI from IL.

I do hold a Utah CCW permit.

Any conciderations I should be aware of in those two states? Probably won't carry but looking more for travel with it in the truck.

You ask a tough question - if for any reason, because despite how much research you do and what answers you come up with in anticipation of being stopped don't mean squat. The absolute answer can only be ascertained once you've gone thru the legal system afterwards. The law enforcement officers and judges you encounter may not be reading from the same source of information or interpreting what's written in the same manner you do. Put simply - there are no guarantees that despite having done your due diligence - you won't find yourself jumping thru some scary legal hoops - even after doing your damnedest to follow the law.

That said - based on the information I found in this quick reference regarding which states honor which licenses that I found on this www.handgunlaw.us - it looks like your Utah CCW permit would be honored in Michigan and Indiana ... but NOT honored in Illinois.

You'll probably want to review each state's rules regarding transport and concealed carry restrictions. They can vary from state to state. The very presence of a weapon can be a game changer. It's certainly a case where what you don't know can really, really cost you!

Good luck! Be safe!

You will be legal in Indiana but not in Michigan, the state of Michigan only recognizes a CCW if you are a resident of the issuing state. Get your Illinois it will be good in Michigan. Jim.

I am assuming you are a resident of Utah. MI does not recognize NON resident Utah permits if you live in another state like IL.

Illinois does not recognize a non resident Utah permit if you live in IL.

A good reference I have found is Legal Heat. It is an app for my iPhone. Updates each time you access it, plus gives info on possible open carry in whatever state your interested in.

IL also requires a FOID card! Firearms Owners Identification. This is required for any type of firearm handgun, rile and or shotgun. This is even before you go for the CCW permit.

Thx Jim... I do have a FOID... I also know I need an IL CCW license... unfortunately I haven't been able to make a class yet. My thought was more around traveling with it in the truck or camper and not concealed carry, just having it with us in the camper for our destination.

Thanks for all the great advice.

Leave the gun in the trailer and you will be fine. Simple, and the police might not kill you.

Living in Illinois but within ten miles of Indiana i will say Indiana is a great state. Indiana will recognize a CCW issued by any other state or foreign country and very few places where you cannot carry. Jim.

I've traveled through IL many times. I've had my gun unloaded, encased and not easily accessed by anyone.

Here is a link to the specific Illinois law:

I always have the unloaded weapon in a locked box and ammo in another locked box. Never both in the same box. Some States are ok as long as you a just passing through. An overnight is not passing through..
