In my experience all over the country, Verizon has broader geographical coverage than AT&T. Both companies cover about the same proportion of the US population, but Verizon seems to do better in rural areas (which is where we like to camp).
The bottom line, though, is it depends on where you go. Some areas have little or no service, some have AT&T or Spring or Verizon networks but not all three. Or even two of them. If not sure who has local coverage, ask the people around you. Or get a cheap prepay phone that works on one of the major networks and try it out. All the private-label brands rent time on one of the big guys network.
