If it's just part of the price, what's the big deal? How the total price compares to similar units would be my only concern. Besides, if something needs fixing right away you can mention that you paid $1000 to him to check it out.

I just got back from the Dealer and it was a very good experience and the bottom line price was within reason.

I love a happy ending. If you are happy that's all that matters. Congratulations and many happy miles !

Is this for work they have already performed (maybe) or to be done if you buy the unit? If to be done, I'd want the work to include servicing not just checking. It's one thing to flip a switch and see if the hw heater comes on. It's quite another to drain, clean, adjust, test. If they have a list of items they will check, simply overwrite Check with Service.

$1,000 seems to be between 8-10 hours of retail labor rates. That's a whole lot of checking....

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

If the dealer wants to charge for checking it out, how can you trust him? If he finds something wrong he's in fear of loosing a sale, so he'll keep his mouth shut. On the other hand if he finds a major problem, he plans on raping you to fix it. Either way I'd show him my tail lights.

It all worked out. In my original post I was just trying to find out if this was standard practice. I didnt want to knock the dealer or start anything. I think over all they are a pretty good dealership. Thanks to everyone that replied back.

Tell him you will take it "as is" and therefore he should remove the extra $1000. I'll bet he balks...
