Central Ohio Dealer Fees.

I am looking to purchase a 2006 Discovery. When I looked at the figures from the dealer it had a $1000 charge to check out the systems on the unit they were trying to sell. It not a guarantee or warranty but to just check them out to make sure they all work. This is in addition to the selling price. Am I missing some thing or is this standard practice now?

That would be a show stopper for me. Why would a reputable dealer put a unit up for sale before checking to see everything was operable?

I agree, This dealer thinks he is doing everyone a favor by selling to them and its a take it or leave deal. The problem is he is the only one in Central Ohio that has a quanty of MHs for sale. Its not a problem for me as Im looking else where.

What on earth did he do for $1000? That is a whole lot of man hours there.

The dealer is simply trying to get an additional $1000 of your money for the coach. I won't pay for such dealer fees when I buy a car or similar. They have also just clearly messaged to you how reputable they are...

RCD with the 39L? It's their job to be sure the systems work before reselling an RV. I would think a dealer would charge for their time/materials to check out a trade-in before reselling - just hide it in the sell price so we don't know it. I wonder if that's a "prep charge" which along with freight on new, taxes & "other applicable charges" isn't included...per their fine print.

We bought our Bounder new from RCD. You'll bet I'll be asking Brad about this charge the next time I see him (which'll be soon because I've got some items that need taken care of before my ext warranty runs out in a few months).

$1,000.00 dealer fees would, for me, equate to finding another source for my RV. MY RV search was a regional search. I finally bought from a dealer after searching in four states from a dozen dealers. I would NOT buy a motor home with an exorbitant dealer fee.

My answer would be NO WAY. Delivery check out should be on the dealers nickel. If you pay for it separately, $500 may for the time.

But the dealer should show that all systems are working as designed at delivery.

Shopped at RCD once, made a quick u-turn and haven't returned. That was 4 MH purchases ago. I can't understand how some dealers can't figure out what they loose long term with their practices!

400.00 to 500.00 is the normal dealer fee. In our case this included, full tank of diesel, total chassis lube, full systems check, two days of tech walk thru assistance, two days at the dealers lot with water, elec sewer. Probably a break even dollar amount for the dealer but a lot IMO for the comfort and knowledge provided!

They can break the price down any way they like. What I want to know is what the check they're asking for needs to say on it? That amount will be a good deal that I'll agree to, an amount that I'll try to negotiate, or an amount that I'll laugh at as I'm walking out the door.

Keep it simple for me Mr. Salesman. I have a really short attention span when it comes to this part of our deal....

I might have misquoted on the 2006. The charge was on a Bounder I was looking at and walked away from. I didnt see the actual figures on the 2006 yet but assumed that charge would be on it after they told me they would take it off the Bounder but wouldnt check out the systems. I was looking to see if that was a normal charge from the dealer.

What am I missing here...if they charge $1000 to check out the system, wouldnt that come off the price they paid to whoever they got it from??

I agree with the others....just another way to inflate the price via a service that should have been done regardless. Your post really brings to light what others have said about the whole Columbus market and RV dealers. This market has lost several dealers over the past several years including Farber, Jerry Greer, and another one down by Springfield. It is sad for a market with over 1.5 million people that we have to put up with just a few dealers who try to take advantage of buyers with tactics like this. Then they wonder why their business fails and they close their doors. Central Ohio needs a really good RV dealer who is honest and carries some top line names. I cannot for the life of me understand why this has not happened. Hope you find the right one from someone who does not try to pull the wool over your eyes.
