I love the old "If Billy jumped off a cliff, would you too" approach to an argument as much as the next person, but it still doesn't detract from the fact that it's not the original subject, which is "Is this normal" and the answer is simply, "Yes", regardless how much one wants to shout from the roof tops that it's discrimination.

My hope was when I posted as I only read the first page and change, which at time was still answering the original question, that the remainder of the pages were a listing of confirmations or denials, and hopefully, park names, as I personally keep track of it to prevent running into it when on the road by accident, as there's nothing more frustrating that finding out something after you've driven all the way there and it's late in the evening.

I keep faintly hoping that the second topic, which I have named below was short lived and would get back on track and I might get something useful out of this thread. I couldn't give a rat's behind if a park chooses to have a year limit or not, if I am not the clientele, it's not my job to force them to accept me.

It's kinda like the scenario where non-smokers go into a marked smoking-allowed establishment and then complain about the smoke and try to have it banned or outlawed on a legislative level vs doing the adult thing of "Going somewhere else where people aren't smoking".

The current thread would be better labeled as it stands, "Is it illegal to discriminate against older RVs", which would be a far more fitting name for the current debate .

Just trying to keep score: 1) It's common for CGs to disallow 10+ y/o coaches 2) It's OK for them to do it, it's their CG. 3) It IS discrimination, by the definition of the word. 4) It's NOT illegal, immoral, or personal.

At least where we travel, it is NOT common practice for commercial rv parks to regulate guests based on the age of their rvs. We see it once in a while, mostly when planning to stay at one place longer than one month.

I know it is discriminatory & offensive to some, but I can live with the 10yr rule as long as there is an exemption for "well loved" older units. At least I know the CG takes pride in their Park and is prepared to back it up with an easy to understand & objective rule.

So, while I have lost interest in the discrimination Yes/No debate, I haven't lost interest in whether or not there is a better solution to this problem for the CG owner who wants to maintain standards for the RV's in his park.

For all those who are offended by the 10yr rule....what are you proposing as a solution for the CG that wants to establish some standards of RV appearance?

Well they did establish a standard the 10 yr. rule. The problem I see is some of the MH's are already not taken care of at that age and look run down. Then on the other hand I have seen some trailers, classics, that will knock your socks off that are absolutely stunning. So unless they want to go through hundreds of pictures not sure there is one easy answer that will cover everything that drives up to their gate.

OK guys, I've had to put my mod hat on and deleted a slew of posts because of bickering.

I quickly ran through this thread again and don't see where in Florida or the name of the CG other than it is a KOA. Right or wrong, you like it or don't it would be good information.

For one if they have a web site I would love to see some photos to see if the place is nice enough to warrant this type of restriction. Secondly if anyone here will be traveling near there and has a problem with it they can take it right off their list of potential CGs.

I'm the OP. I didn't post that info because to me it's no different from advertising (the reverse) and I don't think the forum allows that, so.... But, if anyone wants to know, email me...I'll answer you right back.

And, please understand that this was the first place we made reservations after purchasing the MH. We had not camped in 30 years and had never heard or read about such a thing (call it whatever you like).

The CG is nice, but not fancy. It's sand/grass and some concrete. Tight spaces. No over the top amenities (small pool, hot tub, dog park, etc).

REALLY, nice people. I just don't agree with their policy. Either apply it to ALL coaches or NO coaches. That's my feelings/views........not my husband's Didn't ask the dogs !

Cool

WOW! I just made my way through all of the posts and noticed that most of them were about the right and wrong of the 10 year rule.
Just wondering how many parks are doing this? Is it a great majority or just a few? I do understand the general idea behind the rule, but as I am currently shopping for an RV, I have seen a lot of over ten year old coaches for sale that I would be very happy to own, and would not hesitate to buy it. Since the late 90's the industry has made a great many advances in the construction and amenities of rv's. Now the available selection is amazing, two, three, even four slides, whole wall slides, two baths, etc. The great leap in design started just a little over ten years ago and doesn't seem to be slowing down. There are a great many of these earlier coaches, 1998 and up still on the road and going strong, and still great looking. I think the ten year rule is going to have to be amended at some future point in time because of the great number of these older models. Like mentioned earlier 2002, and 2003 just coming up on the ten year mark. As I am sure probably all of these owners are very happy with their coaches and take the utmost pride and care of them. This is an interesting topic that I will be following. Thanks to all who shared their viewpoints!

As I mentioned earlier, my experience through 34 states over the past 5 years leads me to believe that this restriction is mentioned at less than 5% of the parks we've seen. I'm willing to bet that a lot of those only apply it to long term rentals so, IMHO most of this discussion is philosophical rather than addressing something which is actually a practical problem for RVers.

Still a good discussion but not something that is a big problem lurking on the horizon.

Topic: 1st experience with RV park asking age of our RV!

bowtiepuller wrote: Let me give you bleeding hearts some actualy facts. For twenty five years, we managed rv parks across the u.s. Last year we were managing a park in the fine state of florida. A nice young couple came in and had a 88 fifth wheel, no slides. It looked like an 88 and since we had the 10 year rule, I politely informed the young man of our rule. He cried a stream of cant find a park, his wife was ill, all that stuff. I relented, and he paid a months rent. $650.00 plus he had to pay his own elec. It took four months to have him evicted. He never paid another dime, nor his elec.

bowtiepuller is right. Look, he is not saying that if you own a 10+ year old RV you are a squatter and that you dont pay your bills ... Geez, there are Prevosts worth $200,000 that are 10 years old !! That is not his point.

He is saying that squatters and people who shirk paying their bills as a rule live in older RVs -- they dont live in 3 year old MHs because they cant afford them. So he will never run into a situation where someone shows up in a brand new class A that he thinks cant pay the bills.

I am sure in his 25 years managing a park, he did not turn away more than 2-3% of the people with 10+ year old RVs. But it was a rule they could use to give them a reason to not let undesirable renters into the park.

So if you own an old RV, don't take this the wrong way !!! There is nothing wrong with an old RV, especially some of the vintage RVs ... they are way cool. But the management needs to have a mechanism to not let people into a park and to do it legally and without causing much problem. To just tell someone "look, we dont want you here because we suspect that you wont pay the monthly dues" doesnt go over as easy as "i'm sorry, its not my rule, its the parks, but your RV does not meet the park's criteria."

Many parks have this 10 year rule and in reading all of these posts "I've been RVing for 20 years in my 10+ year old rig and never saw a park with this rule" tells me that you guys have no idea !! MANY parks have this rule, they just dont advertise it (although it is clearly on their "rules sheet") and they dont enforce them on you because you dont look like a transient. You guys are posting pictures of beautiful 20 year old RVs that are well maintained. That's not the target with these rules.

I originally stayed away from this post because people give some pretty ignorant responses as to why this rule is wrong. But I was bored and read through it today. (moderator edit)

Many get wound around the axle about a 10 year rule when they really don't look at why it's there. Many states (I live in California) have such messed up rental laws, that once someone is allowed to rent property or a space, it can take months to evict them. So if you don't have some type of effective rule to reduce the chances of being stuck with a rolling meth lab, you'll be in trouble.

In this economy, people have been forced from their homes for many reasons and have moved into RV parks in whatever they can find, buy or rent. I feel for them, but I really don't want to go camping at a place that has a bunch of permanent residents who have stockpiled everything they own in their RV space. By the way....to clarify something...these are permanent residents, not fulltimers.

My rig is almost 8 years old and I will soon fall into the 10 year rule. My coach is still immaculate and I don't expect to be turned away from any campground even when it's 15 years old. But, I CERTAINLY don't want to park next to a piece of junk. No matter how nice the person may be, if their coach is a pile of junk, there is a good chance the owners aren't much better. Remember the saying....if it walks like a duck, looks like duck and quacks like duck....it's probably a duck!

Thanks for all the intertainment in this thread, it has been a fun read, but not very informative, just entertaining.

I have been in 27 states this year, with only two advance reservations and they were at Military Reservations and I never encountered or at least had it brough up, the 10 year rule and my MH is a 2000 Model. Now last year in Las Vegas I checked out an RV Resort with the 10 year rule, and they would have let me stay, but after driving through and looking at it, I elected to go someplace else as I felt I would not fit in with the life style I was seeing.

I think it would be good for some of the posters here to ask a CG or Resort with the 10 year rule why they have it. It just might open a few eyes, not all, but a few...
