Changes from 6 to 8 months Stay in US
I have been reading that the US government is considering allowing us to stay in the US 8 months instead of 6 soon. Not sure if it has been discussed on irv2 on a different forum but has anyone heard anything new. Apparently The Snobird association has been lobbying for it.

That would be a nice change, then all we would need would be afforable travel medical insurance. Calculating the back date schedule and the forms to avoid paying income tax in the US are a pain to say the least.
I've had some e mails from the Canadian Snowbird Association, but none on this subject.
Latest was that the B.C. Govt. was going to allow dispensing of prescription drugs for 6 months instead of the current 3 to be covered by B.C. Med. ; also a nice change.
C.S.A. also involved with Florida Govt. on the out of state drivers licensing requirements.
They know the issues , and their working on them.

I heard that the snow bird assoc was lobbying for 7 months. In Ontario we have to be home for 5 months to retain our OHIP.

How do they know how long you have been in the USA? its simple math from the time you cross to the time you cross back. Both sides share the info. If you get caught exceeding the time limit in the states you may get denied entry the next year. If you are south of the border for more then 7 months you could lose your OHIP. That would suck...

Hi,
just a little clarification ..... Georgetown350 is correct. It has nothing to do with passports since you are still entitled to drive into the US without the need of a passport (although I would recommend using it).
Back in the '90s, I worked in the Caribbean and the Canadian government knew exactly when I left and came back and my income tax reflected that.

Really???? What part of the country do you live in? Our part of the country you can't even walk across the border without a passport. They want to know the purpose of your visit, how long you will be staying, etc.

In MB you can get a card which allows you to cross the boarder into ND and MN. Costs half as much as a passport but can not be used for air travel.

First time heard of that. Why would Manitoba be different than Saskatchewan? Canadian Border is Canadian Border. I'd like to hear more about that and how it is aquired.

Come to B.C. and get a Nexus card and the border is free to cross. They also have a crossing approved drivers licience.

It is an (Enhanced Drivers License) EDL. Not all Provinces have it.
Canadian EDL.
I have one from the State of Michigan. Always have it on me just in case I want to go to Windsor, Ont. for dinner.

Well there you go..................Goes to show that Saskatchewan is many steps behind everyone else as usual.

Canadians do not need passports when driving across the border to the U.S.
Crossing U.S. Borders | Homeland Security
I'm in Toronto, don't use a Nexus card nor passport to cross the border.
