changing queen to king
After monthsnof research, we have pretty much decided on our MH purchase! It's got everything that dits our needs and is gorgeous: a 2003 Monaco Executive. The only things that are not ideal are the bed size and the carpet. The carpet is still good now, but we have 4 dogs, so it will have to be changed to laminate, engineered wood, Adura, or something down the road.
But here's the real question: if we're too crowded in the queen bed, can we assume that since king beds are usually options, is the slide the same size such that the king would still fit? How do they fit the king and still have room for the bedside tables? I'd hate to just remove one bedside table entirely and have the bed be off-center and one side have no bedside table at all. But rebuilding the tables sounds difficult and expensive.
Any thoughts/experience with this would be appreciated!

The bed side tables disappear, or are so narrow they're useless. If you can download an old sales brochure you may get to see a photo, of what space there would be for the tables if you make the change.

We have a king in our MH. I have a good sized stand on my side (toward the front) but my wife has almost nothing on her side. We have a queen at home and would have preferred that, but since this is a used purchase, we cannot see changing at this stage. We would definitely have preferred a nice sized stand on both sides. Understand, this is a 45 foot MH. A shorter MH would loose the stand on both sides.

Question.....if you can modify your bedroom area ie remove the nightstands to accommodate a wider mattress what about the mattress length? Aren't king's longer than a queen?
In my coach when the bedroom slide is brought in the mattress butts all the way up to the dresser cabinets.

Our coach, a 05 Safari made by Monaco, had a King bed from the factory when we got it. It is a 38' coach. The king in this unit, and I think is most MHs is not a true residential king, it is a "RV king". Ours was the same length as a residential queen and could not be longer because when both slides are pulled in the foot of the bed touches the cabinet on the other side . It had one bedside table/cabinet and none on the other side and did sit off center. We have a queen in the S&B and prefer it so we did the conversion to take out the king and go with a queen. That was an easy change. The storage under the bed was the same size either way and the "deck" that the mattress sat on was just wider on one side. I peeled back the felt cover and cut the deck board to a queen size (now the deck and mattress sit even over the storage below, had a local cabinet shop make a bedside unit for the other side to match the existing one and bought a residential size queen mattress. With the King in there was no cabinet on DWs side of the bed and not much room for her to get in and out and hard to make up the bed. The queen fixed all that and looks lots better.

I just downsized from a king to a queen. The RV king is 72" wide vs 60" wide for the queen. You will need another 6 inches on either side to keep the bed centered. More than likely this will entail replacing the platform with a wider one. The good news (at least in my case) is that the frame below the platform was narrower than the dimensions for a queen. I believe they do this to keep things standard. The overhang of the platform another 6 inches should not be an issue. My platform was made from a 1" piece of plywood with a cloth/felt material glued to either side and a channel cut around the edge into which a piece of T moulding was inserted. Good luck with your project.

Here are the sizes for "normal" mattresses. Measure to see what you really have. Measure to see what will fit with the slide in or out. Then you will know for sure what will fit.
USA & Canada
Twin/Single 39 × 75
Twin/Single XL 39 × 80
Double/Full 54 × 75
Double/Full XL 54 × 80
Queen 60 × 80
Olympic/Expanded Queen 66 × 80
California Queen 60 × 84
King 76 × 80
California King 72 × 84
Grand King 80 × 98

We do not have a Motorhome but have a jayco fifth wheel we purchased last year. It was ordered on the lot with a Queen bed which was 60x80. In our deal we had the bed converted to a king which is 72x80. Same length but 12" wider. Before the conversion we had a night stand with drawer on the left side and a stationary shelf on the right. The conversion consisted of them ordering a narrower night stand on the left side and the same narrower shelf on the right. The plywood base that also lifts up was rebuilt with a larger one and both struts were replaced with very heavy duty ones. We have less walking space to walk around the bed and its narrower by the closet. We love the bed and like the extra room. I have restless leg syndrome and the extra space keeps my wife from getting black and blue. Just kidding on that, it's not quite that bad. The one thing I can say, there definitely is a trade off for space but we are very satisfied with it.

This has all been helpful. It convinces me we should live with the queen for a while before we choose to lose the space. Thank you for the advice!
