In my humble opinion, the cheapest state in which to register an RV is the state where you are a legal resident. Anything else is asking for problems.

Now, having said that, if you are a full timer, and can make anywhere you want, your residence, SD is a very reasonable rate fee and tax wise, and very friendly to full timers.

Just my opinion.

Hi gblomgren,
The short answer to your question is Montana or South Dakota. That being said, understand the law in the state you have as your domicile. My comments are based on the assumption that you are purchasing and then registering a coach. If the coach has already been purchased and taxes paid, my answer could change based on the state where you have your domicile. An example would be Florida. My coach is very inexpensive to register and there are no additional taxes, inspections or driver's license requirements.

Montana has permanent tags after ten years and no sales tax and no inspections.

Florida is not bad.....after paying some up-front one-time fees, Tags cost about $70.00 annually. Rook

The cheapest for registration. May not be the cheapest for getting Vehicle or health Insurance.

All above should be in your domicile state.

Though I've pretty well decided to stay put in Nevada, it's definitely not even close on being cheap on any registration. Due to the various refunds on prior RV and a truck I sold, I never really determined what the actual cost was, but the young lady who did the registration forewarned me that next year it would be just short of $1900 for my new Thor 34XD. Two drivers, two trailers and the RV will run me right at $2700. Oh well, beats walking and using a tent!

NOTE: There have been many cases recently of someone registering their Motor home in another state to avoid either registration fees or taxes..

Well a number of states are cracking down on that now, IF they feel you have defrauded them by registering with an out of state LLC what they do is decide how much you owe them and asses back taxes, penalities and interest... And they tend to be very "Generous" (To themselves) in doing so.

Thus the person who said "The state in which you reside" is very accurate.

There are, last I checked 4 states that allow you to list your domicile as what ammounts to a post office box (I usually say shoe box)

Texas (Escapees)
South Dakota
Nevada (Expensive depending on the county you register in)
and Flordia.

Georgia, however. May need to be added to this list.. My daughter (Who actually lives in GA) has everything listed to her PO box. Do not know how much it would cost me to "Move" there but.. I might.. If I find a mail service I like.

How do you get around a State that doesn't allow registration to another state.? It changes the address on your D.L also. Any changes to D.L address and registration is noted on both papers. This stops a lot of cheaters. Out of State tags draws attention to Highway Patrols .

Several states have low priced tags (vehicle registration), but may have a sales tax on new registrations, or may have impact fees for new vehicles in the state. And of course, some states have personal property taxes you will want to avoid as well.

If sales tax is not a consideration (you already own the RV and have paid any applicable taxes), Florida is a good choice. So is South Dakota and Montana.

We currently live in Washington, but will be full-timing when we purchase our RV. We will establish our domicile wherever it is the most RV friendly and economical. We also plan to set up a mail forwarding address.

Hi gblomgren,
Thanks for the update. You are on the right track to go with a state that is RV friendly. Just understand what it is you must do to cut the legal domicile ties with the current state. For me, states that do not realize they compete with other states for a citizen's business are doomed to loose this target market.
