Do you need a special drivers lisence for Class A?
If so how did you get yours, ddid you already have a mh? Is it a drive and written test like the C? Is it difficult?
TIA

No special license needed in Georgia as long as its not for commercial use.

I already had a cdl. A lot of people will buy a large class A and get in it and take off down the road with no previous experience driving something that large. Some people carry it off fine without problems and learn as they go. Others learn a costly lesson with damage to their unit. I have seen alot of questions pop up on the forum about air brakes that tells me there is alot of people out there that have no understanding of how they work. They are very different than regular hydraulic brakes, and there are many little things that can cause a problem. That said I think it is a good idea for people to take a short course at a driving school or at least get an air brake manual and read up on the air systems and how they work. That way you can sence a problem as it starts and safely get off the road before a real problem starts.

In California all you need for a 30 footer is a standard drivers license. Only when you go over 40 feet in a MH or certain weights with a 5th wheel do you need a higher license.

X2 Amen. It's amazing to me that many states will let a driver operate an air brake-equipped MH without any licensing requirement even though operators of air brake-equipped commercial vehicles have to pass a specific licensing section on their operation. That's over and above the fact that getting behind the wheel of a 40' coach weighing ~35-45,000 lbs is a little different than driving the family car.

I always give rental truck lots of distance after I realized someone like me, with zero experience driving one, could be behind the wheel. I have scared the liver out of myself, but never had an incident. Maybe because I was too scared to even go the speed limit.

All depends on the sate where you reside. Check with your DPS.

In British Columbia, you are required to get an Air Brake certification if you have a rig with air brakes. My 37 has hydraulic brakes so for that, my regular license is sufficient.
