Class A's on Blue Ridge Parkway?
We would love to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway in our class A but we're concerned with the tunnels. Have any of you done this and what was your experience? Thanks!

Here is a link to a list of tunnel clearances: Tunnel Clearances - Blue Ridge Parkway
Personally I would not take a Class A on the BRP. I'd stay in nearby campgrounds and use the toad to drive the road.

X2. While its technically doable, it might not be very enjoyable. In addition to the many tunnels, there is not much in the way of straight, level roadway. Hills, curves and no shoulder are the order of the day.

In fact, there are several arched tunnels and bridge work where the center of the road is the only place with (perhaps) sufficient clearance for any big rig (MH or TT).
Just to be sure I suggest contacting the U.S. Parks service: (540)767-2490 for specific information.

Out of 23, it looks like only three of them would be an issue for my rig, at least height that is;
458.8/ Lickstone Ridge / 402 ft./ 18’1”/ 11’1”
459.3/ Bunches Bald / 255 ft./ 18’4”/ 10’6”
461.2/ Big Witch / 348 ft./ 18’1”/ 11’3”
Regardless, we stayed at a KOA in Fancy Gap that is just off the BRP on ramp that I would recommend.

Thanks for your comments! We have always stayed at a CG and taken day trips on the BRP. I think we'll probably continue to do that!

We traveled form Asheville, NC to Roanoke, Va. in a 39 ft diesel with no troubles for height. The exhaust brake was ESSENTIAL. Steep down hills with sharp curves. The southern part was very dramatic. Beautiful pictures. Check camp grounds for length limitation.

I've pulled a fifth wheel most of the length of the BRP, but a car is a more pleasant tour. The real low bridges are at the far end in North Carolina - I would bypass that area. The others are ok but you will need to stay near the middle in some of them. And since the road isn't real wide, that means you are taking the whole road through the tunnel. They are short, though, so it is manageable.
All in all, I agree with the others and recommend parking the big rig and touring by car.

Sounds like those tunnel heights are a guesstimate: "Measurements may vary by 1 to 6 inches due to pavement fluctuations." Now that makes me wonder it that can apply to all tunnels and bridges in the U.S.

Toad is the way to go to be sure, koa near natural bridge

Agree, drive the toad instead. We drove our former 35' gasser from the NC border north, and I thought my arms would fall off after a 100 mile day. Never the coach again on the BRP. But in a car it's a beautiful drive.

I just did Skyline Drive and some of the Blue Ridge Parkway over July 4th. It was beautiful, but the driving part was not much fun at all. Next time I will stay off the BRP and ride the motorcycle to enjoy the road and the sights.

I think I would stick with driving the toad on the BRP. JMHO
