Clearance For Off Road
Hi, I purchased a 1993 camper van and like to drive down to the river to camp. The problem is the trail has a lot of ruts and holes. The van only has about 8" clearance and I'm afraid to high center. How would you suggest that this problem be fixed?

Raise the axle with larger tires, take a different route or pay to have the road graded

The only way to raise a axle to gain clearance is to install taller tires, a 4in lift only raises the frame. Which is your clearance problem? Either one will raise your center of gravity and will effect handling. I don't know but can the holes be filled with rocks from the area? I have placed rocks in a rut at the bottom and let rain and silt fill it in for me, yes it takes a while but it might work. Erosion made the ruts in the first place, stop the erosion. Just a thought

Short, sweet, accurate, and to the point.
My suggestion is to trade the van for a Uni-Mog if you truly want to drive unimproved trails. We see a lot of them around Moab, UT.

The downside to larger diameter tires is the change in effective gear ratios. The engine will not have as much pulling power for that reason. Your slowest speed will be faster than with OEM size tires, which is important when off-roading.
